Mr. Reznikoff added, “We created a subgrouping within the Science category inspired by Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer, including numerous items related to Physics, World War II and the Atomic Age. Items are signed by Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman and Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project. We hope everyone can join us on the 18th.”
Lot 395 is a one-page typed letter in English signed by Albert Einstein dated November 3, 1942, discussing the influence of Johannes Kepler on Einstein’s research into his Special and General Theories of Relativity. Einstein’s hypothesis that light and space curve was based on Kepler’s observations that planetary orbits were elliptical. The letter should command $25,000-$35,000. An aside: the Scottish actor Tom Conti plays Albert Einstein in the movie Oppenheimer.
Lot 396 is a photograph of Albert Einstein taken by Herman Landshoff and later used for the 15-cent U.S. stamp commemorating Einstein’s 100th birthday in 1979. The photo is boldly signed by Einstein (as “Albert Einstein 47”) along the lower margin. It is expected to gavel for $20,000-$30,000.

Both pages also include flow diagrams and a numbered sequence of computer commands (est. $9,000-$10,000). Richard Feynman is played by Jack Quaid in Oppenheimer.
First Ladies Martha Washington, Rachel Jackson, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy and Nancy Reagan are highlighted in the October sale. Lot 150 is a four-page autograph letter signed by First Lady Martha Washington written on February 15, 1794 in Philadelphia, referring to her husband three times, as the “President.” Martha Washington letters are especially rare in the private sector. This example is particularly rich in textual references to Washington. The letter has a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-$30,000.
Lot 212 is a first edition copy (Stoddard’s Edition 1) of Phillis Wheatley’s Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, by Phillis Wheatley, Negro Servant to Mr. John Wheatley, of Boston, in New England (London: A. Bell, Bookseller, 1773). The book is from the personal collection of John C. Shields, a college professor and Wheatley scholar (est. $20,000-$30,000).
Lot 247 is a Dutch land grant signed by Director-General Peter Stuyvesant on April 16, 1654, granting a freehold in what is today’s Manhattan Financial District, just steps away from Wall Street. The land grant, to Cornelis van Ruijven, corresponded to part of a sheep pasture located near the Broad Canal, or “Heere Gracht,” an important trade route and waterway built by free and enslaved Dutch and African laborers in today’s heart of Lower Manhattan (est. $20,000-$30,000).
Lot 244 is a check signed by Polish Jewish émigré Haym Salomon, one of the most elusive of all the Founding Fathers, considered by some even more uncommon than Button Gwinnett. Salomon, along with other Patriot financiers, helped fund the Continental Army; he signed this Revolutionary War-dated check promising him 656 livres tournois (est. $18,000-$20,000).
Right in time for Halloween, Lot 371 is a first edition, second issue of Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Westminster: Archibald Constable and Co., 1897), signed and dated by the author as “Bram Stoker / 15 Decr. 1899” on the front loose endpaper (est. 15,000-$20,000). Chase, asking him to expedite his application to become U.S. Marshal of the Arizona Territory (est. $7,000-$8,000).
Lot 419 is a Mickey Mantle rookie card, 1951 Bowman #253, PSA graded, certified “Authentic Altered” and perfectly centered (est. $7,000-$8,000). - Lake District setting for story of hope and healing
- Psychologist Annie Cook admits decades of listening to her patients has provided the inspiration for her debut novel, No Small Change.
And the 63-year-old has so many ideas and storylines built up, that she already has a further six books in the planned series.
No Small Change has already racked up a lengthy string of five-star reviews since its recent release.
The life-affirming romance has been described as ‘a treat’, ‘hard to put down’ and ‘wonderful’ by captivated critics.
Reviewer Stewart Rayner stated: “I was pleasantly surprised and genuinely charmed by the story line, the characters and of the course the location which is a lovely village setting in the Lake District.”
No Small Change is a gripping story of hope, healing and nature’s powers set within the windswept fells of Cumbria.
Following the fortunes of menopausal Adie and widowed farmer Mark, who are both searching for new meaning in shattered lives, Annie’s novel is authentic in its treatment of loss and despair.
She revealed that her realistic characterisation is down to her patients as well as her own experiences.
Annie explained: “The idea for No Small Change came from a combination of my own and other people’s circumstances, such as menopause, damaging family secrets, betrayal, and grief.
“The characters are complex combinations of a lot of people I know, and their circumstances are influenced by those of people I have worked with, over the years.”
As well as a highly regarded psychologist, specialising in helping people with long-term insomnia, Annie is also a qualified vibrational healer.
And she has adapted the meditational practice to have a central role in both No Small Change and the forthcoming sequels.
Annie, who splits her time between her homes in the UK and Italy, added: “As a vibrational healer I work with people to realign their frequencies to promote healing on different levels.
“The incredible healing power of vibration is something that I have seen and felt for myself and witnessed in other people countless times.
“I have felt compelled for a long time now to put these stories into the world where they can perhaps inspire other people.
“The first book in my series is about the power of vibrational energy within the walls of a very special little house that people find themselves being drawn to, in an emotionally struggling or wounded state, or faced with overcoming trauma.
“The energy within house subtly helps them heal.”

Pugliese (American, 1916-1982), a painter, illustrator, sculptor, and historian who, from an early age, had a passion for the American West as well as United States military history, cemented during his four years of service in World War II.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Pugliese enrolled in the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he studied under Harry Fisk, Ben Dale, and Burne Hogarth, honing his own skills as an artist. Carl also had a passion for great illustration art and collected works by many of the most renowned artist-illustrators of the time.

Pugliese was friends with many of the artists. In the collection are drawings and paintings signed to him. He had a keen eye and collected a large number of wonderful pieces. These will be coming to market for the first time in this auction.

Howard Pyle was an American illustrator, painter and author, primarily of books for young people. He was a native of Wilmington, Delaware but spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. His 1883 classic publication The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood remains in print, and his other books frequently have medieval European settings, including a four-volume set on King Arthur. He is also well known for his illustrations of pirates. He founded the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art and Vincent van Gogh once wrote in a letter to his brother Theo that Pyle's work "struck me dumb with admiration.”

Tom Lovell was an American illustrator and painter, as well as a creator of pulp fiction magazine covers and illustrations, and of visual art of the American West. He produced illustrations for National Geographic magazine and many others, and painted many historical Western subjects such as interactions between Indians and white settlers and traders. He was inducted into the Society of Illustrators' Hall of Fame in 1974. Lovell said, "I consider myself a storyteller with a brush. At the time of his death, Price was honorary president of the Society of Illustrators in New York.

- Consigning the work of Fritz Scholder
- Fritz Scholder (Native American, 1937-2005) was a prolific artist born in 1937 in Breckenridge, Minnesota. He attended Wisconsin State University, Sacramento State University and received his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona. He then moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he taught painting and history at the Institute of Native American Arts for five years. He traveled extensively and lectured at many universities and art conferences including Princeton and Dartmouth College. In 1972 he was invited by the Smithsonian Institution to participate in a two-person show with T.C. Cannon. His awards are numerous and his reputation as an artist continues to expand.
Fritz Scholder paintings have seen a dramatic rise in pricing over the last five to seven years. The most desirable of his works are paintings from the 1970’s. Important collectors have purchased his works and there have been museum shows exhibiting his work. It is anticipated that his works will continue to increase in value over time. Fritz Scholder created paintings, works on paper, limited edition prints, sculptures and books.
If you are interested in consigning for sale works by Fritz Scholder you have several choices. You can consign it to an auction house to be offered at auction. You can also consign it to a gallery that specializes in the work of Fritz Scholder for private sale. The value of a Fritz Scholder work of art will vary dependent upon the type of artwork and the year in which it was created. Fritz Scholder paintings from the 1970’s are the most desirable and the most valuable. Research the auction house or gallery to be sure they have a good reputation and that they specialize in the works of Fritz Scholder. Review their past sales results for similar works you are considering consigning and review their consignment terms and conditions.
There are several reputable auction houses other than the large auction houses. These auction houses provide a more personal experience and often have lower fees than the large auction houses. If you are considering consigning works to a gallery, research galleries that specialize in the secondary market as opposed to galleries that represent artists. You will want to execute a consignment agreement so that there is documentation associated with the artwork.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to consigning your Fritz Scholder artwork to an auction house versus an art gallery. The advantages of consigning artwork to a gallery for private sale is that they will typically consign all works by Fritz Scholder no matter the type of artwork or the year it was created. Other advantages are that it is a private transaction and you will typically realize more value from a gallery than an auction house. Disadvantages include that there is no timeline associated with the sale of the artwork. It may sell immediately or may take up to a year to sell. The advantages of consigning artwork to an auction house are that they typically sell eighty to one hundred percent of the lots offered at any given auction. Disadvantages include the fact that it is a public sale and the prices realized are typically less than if you consigned the work to a gallery for private sale. If the work does not sell than it is a matter of public record at what price the work of art did not sell. Auction houses also may not be interested in all works by Fritz Scholder.
If you do your due diligence in researching an auction house or an art gallery to consign works by Fritz Scholder, you will find an adequate option that best fits your needs and goals.

- Auctioning the Works of Earl Biss, Jr
- Earl Biss, Jr (1947-1988) was a well-known Native American artist. He was raised on the Crow reservation in Montana and attended the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the San Francisco Art Institute. He traveled extensively in Europe where he was influenced by impressionist style of many European artists. His paintings have an abstract quality with Indian figures merging with the landscape and is known as Contemporary Southwest Art. A partial list of public collections include the The Heard Museum, Phoenix, Arizona, The Philbrook Museum, Tulsa, Oklahoma, The Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe, New Mexico, The Smithsonian Institute, Washington, DC, The Denver Art Museum, Denver, Colorado, and The Museum of the Plains Indian, Browning, Montana.
Earl Biss paintings have done particularly well at auction houses over the last five years. The number of paintings being offered and the prices realized have seen a dramatic increase. If you are interested in consigning works by Earl Biss to an auction house there are several from which to choose. You will want to research the reputation of the auction houses you are considering. An auction house will research the Earl Biss painting(s) you are considering consigning. They will provide a low to high estimate for the painting(s). This is the range at which the painting(s) are expected to sell based on past auction results of similar works by Earl Biss. Research past Earl Biss auction results of the auction house to determine whether they perform well in the sale of Earl Biss paintings. You can then establish a reserve for the Earl Biss painting(s) which is the amount below which you do not wish to sell the painting(s). A consignment agreement listing the paintings, detailing the estimates, reserves and commission will then be presented for signature by both parties.
When considering auction houses for the sale of Earl Biss painting(s), be sure to read their terms and conditions of consignment and sale. Auction houses will typically charge between five to twenty percent commission of the hammer price upon sale depending upon the number and / or value of the Earl Biss painting(s) you are consigning. Note that all auction houses charge a buyer’s premium on top of the hammer price which is a fee charged to the winning bidder. Payment to you the consignor is the hammer price upon sale less the auction house’s commission. You should also be aware of hidden fees charged by certain auction houses. These include handling fees, catalog or photography fees and buy in fees. Buy in fees is an amount the consignor must pay to have the Consignor’s Earl Biss painting(s) returned in the event they do no sell at auction. This is a tactic to entice the consignor to lower the reserve(s) to ensure the sale of the painting(s).
There are several reputable auction houses other than the large auction houses. With the internet even regional or smaller auction houses can successfully market your Earl Biss paintings to a large national and international audience. These auction houses can also provide a more personal auction consignment experience by dealing directly with the owners or managers of the auction house. They also often have lower fees and will consign Earl Biss works at no cost to the consignor.
As Earl Biss paintings continue to gain in value and popularity consigning a painting(s) for sale to an auction house should be a favorable experience. Complete your due diligence in reviewing the reputation, experience and terms and conditions of consignment and sale and you should have a successful sale of your Earl Biss painting(s).

- Miller & Miller's Online-Only Auction, October 7, Features Canadiana, Folk Art, Pottery and Textiles
- New Hamburg, ON, Canada, Sep 23, 2023 -- Four original paintings by acclaimed Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (1903-1980), an extremely rare cobalt-washed stoneware flask from the 1850s by William Collinson, and an equally rare beaver pint fruit jar attributed to the Sydenham Glass Factory (Wallaceburg, Ontario) are a few of the expected top lots in Miller & Miller Auctions, Ltd.’s online-only Canadiana & Historic Objects auction scheduled for Saturday, October 7th.
The 342-lot auction, beginning promptly at 9 am Eastern time, features a well-rounded offering of fresh-to-the-market Canadiana, folk art, pottery, textiles and more from some of the best collections in the country, with material dating from the 19th-20th centuries. Canadian art ranges from the traditional work of J.J. Kenyon and Homer Watson to the great folk art of Maud Lewis.
“The October 7th sale is an important one for serious collectors of Canadian heritage,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions. Ltd. “It features signature pieces from the late Honorable Jim Fleming, Bill and Kristin Kendall, Brian Hutchison and Alba DiCenso, Leigh Moore and the late Wendy Daxon, June and the late David Chambers, as well as many others.”
Mr. Miller added, “We feature untouched heirloom furniture in color, historic stoneware and pottery, trade signs, hooked rugs, weathervanes and iron ware. This is not a sale to be missed.” The sale’s undisputed headliner is Maud Lewis, who has appeared in Miller & Miller auctions past, where she consistently sparked keen bidding wars and exceeded even the high estimates.
The four paintings up for bid include The Three Black Cats (est. $25,000-$30,000); Two Deer (est. $20,000-$25,000); Oxen in Winter (est. $18,000-$23,000); and Covered Bridge in Winter (est. $18,00-$23,000). The first two are serial images found only in the 1960s; Oxen in Winter spans two decades; Covered Bridge in Winter was painted toward the end of Ms. Lewis’s life. All four paintings are signed and framed. Estimates quoted in this report are in Canadian dollars.
The important cobalt-washed flask with incised work on both panels by English-born Canadian artisan William Collinson (1830-1890) is an example of marked and decorated orated stoneware flasks. It features four beautiful and well-executed sunflowers on one side. The reverse has been incised in a cursive script, "Wm. Collinson Saint Thomas Canada West" (est. $25,000-$35,000).
The scarce, circa 1880-1900 left-facing beaver pint fruit jar attributed to the Sydenham Glass Factory in Wallaceburg, Ontario has a pre-sale estimate of $12,000-$18,000. Also, circa 1895-1907 Canadian cream-glazed ewer and basin with floral motifs on both pieces, attributed to the Owen Sound Pottery Company of Horning & Brownscombe, should command $1,500-$2,000. It’s unusual to find a matching ewer and basin together, and this set is in excellent condition.
Two very different lots have identical $4,000-$6,000 estimates. One is a country Empire-style chest of drawers (Huttonville, Peel County, Ontario) made by William Soper in 1877, with inlays that include stars, diamonds, hearts, birds and crowns. The other is a circa 1890 Northeastern North America Mohawk cradle board of fine quality, adorned with carved and painted floral decoration on the reverse side and flower and bird carvings with lovely color throughout.
An early Quebec (circa 1880) double-sided gameboard, one side with a Parcheesi game and the reverse a checkerboard, the board framed with a metal eye at one end for hanging, is estimated to finish at $3,500-$5,000. Also, a rare, circa 1900 Canadian games table having attributes of both tramp art and Adirondack styles, the top having two cribbage boards and a central checkers board, each corner decorated with horseshoe and playing card motifs, should hit $2,500-$3,000.
Wonderful original paintings by acclaimed Canadian artists will include the following works:
- An 1894 fine, early rare oil on board portrait of the bay horse Harry Clay, Jr. by J.J. Kenyon (Waterloo County, Ontario), shown in profile view, 17 ¼ inches by 23 inches (sight, less frame), signed lower left and in very good condition (est. $2,000-$5,000).
- An early 20th century winter landscape oil by Homer Watson, titled March Day, depicting a rural farm or homestead in late winter or early spring, with a house and outbuildings, signed lower left and titled and housed in a wood and gilt frame (est. $3,000-$3,500).
- A 1929 watercolor Interior Study by Prudence Heward, depicting a large room with paneling, a beamed ceiling and a large fireplace, rendered in brown and beige tones, signed lower left and in a modern wood frame with neutral matting (est. $2,000-$3,000).
An unusual, circa 1900 Canadian armchair constructed from moose antlers, with a deep upholstered seat and back with a pointed arch, the antlers forming the legs, arms, and wings of the back, should realize $3,500-$5,000; while a circa 1850 open cupboard (Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia), having a scalloped top and sides to the upper section and applied moldings to the sides of the upper half, raised on applied bracket feet, has a pre-sale estimate of $1,500-$1,800.
Internet bidding will be thru the Miller & Miller website (www.MillerandMillerAuctions.com), as well as LiveAuctioneers.com. Telephone and absentee bids will also be accepted.
While this is an Internet-only auction, with no in-person event to attend, bidders can tune in to the live webcast on Saturday, October 7th, to watch lots close in real time. Here’s a link to the sale: https://live.millerandmillerauctions.com/auctions/4-9WE30X/canadiana-historic-objects?limit=36.
