Foxfield Railway, one of Britain’s oldest industrial railways, has been awarded a grant worth £24,700 from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport’s Culture Recovery Fund, Second Round. Announced over Easter, the grant means that Foxfield Railway can now re-open to the public 6 weeks early, as soon as Covid restrictions permit, providing crucial additional income for this historic heritage railway near Blythe Bridge.
Foxfield is the home of the world famous Knotty Heritage Train and a number of historic steam locomotives and not only provides traditional days out for all the family but also plays an important part on a national locomotive restoration stage. The railway originally grew up to serve Foxfield Colliery in the Cheadle coalfield and Foxfield is now an essential component of Stoke on Trent’s industrial heritage and heritage tourism trail. Having previously hosted BBC TV film crews and historian and Foxfield fan, Lucy Worsley, Foxfield will now make its contribution to the leisure industry’s pandemic recovery across the county, putting Staffordshire firmly on the staycation map for 2021.
Foxfield Chairman Dave Scragg said “This is wonderful news and allows the Railway to open to the public (socially distanced of course) on Sunday 23rd May. This grant will be absolutely vital to getting everything spruced up and clearing the backlog of maintenance jobs accrued over the winter. It also allows us to take forward some very exciting developments geared towards entertaining families with young children which have been held up owing to lockdown. Watch out for further announcements soon!”
Additional information: Foxfield Railway offers steam train rides through beautiful Staffordshire countryside. The Foxfield experience also includes a buffet in the traditional station, a gift shop, museum, miniature railway plus on-train Afternoon Tea services and special
events. Socially distanced compartment tickets are available on the website now.
