South London writer’s hit book on storytelling

A retired civil servant from South London has discovered that the world’s greatest storytellers have been following the same script since they first picked up a pen.
From Homer and Ovid through Shakespeare, Dickens and Orwell a similar pattern of storytelling can be traced, if you know where to look.
And Paul Larkin is revealing all in his number one new book, How to Write a Story: an alternative approach using the subconscious.
The 71-year-old from Woolwich explained: “The purpose of How to write a story: an alternative approach using the subconscious was to understand why every famous story began with a normal existence then struggled and then succeeded.
“It was a down, struggle, up pattern.
“Every speaker and story of note still uses this pattern.
“I asked why, and the text of the book offers a possible explanation.”
Paul’s previous three books about writing and storytelling have all been successful.
And his online communications advice blog has a regular weekly audience of around 40,000.
The former teacher’s latest publication has already reached number one in Amazon’s writing charts as well as receiving a five-star reader review.
How to Write a Story: an alternative approach using the subconscious explores natural influences for following a set pattern when either writing or orally recounting a story.
Paul’s findings are not only beneficial for any budding writer but also an eye-opener for everyone on how the brain has evolved.
Paul added: “The book offers thoughts on early man’s basic conflicts.
“These range from getting food for the family to learning how to be selfless.
“There is a reference to the characters that every human being has met in their lifetime.
“The motivation of every character in every story has the same few reasons, and the emotions of every character in every story has the same few qualities.”
During a colourful and varied career, Paul spent more than a decade in Australia where he regularly wrote jokes for a tabloid newspaper, appeared in a TV soap opera, and joined the magicians circle.
Since his retirement from the civil service he has pursued his interest in books and storytelling.
