Guildford writer’s Hong Kong thriller published

Half-written stories left on a typewriter may not be a conventional method of encouraging a youngster to read.
But the ploy didn’t only work with Suzanna Gabin, it also encouraged her to begin creating her own adventures on paper.
Despite Suzanna’s late arrival to the world of literature she has now written her first novel.
The Guilty Present is a highly accomplished thriller that has earned positive feedback from captivated readers.
Suzanna, from Guildford, admits she owes a lot to her parents and the junior typewriter.
She said: “I was older than average in starting reading, to the extent that my schoolteacher warned my parents about it.
“Instead of worrying they bought me a children’s typewriter, which I bashed about, until one day I found a piece of paper with writing on it in the carriage.
“This happened again and again until, as my mother told me, I presented her with one of the pieces of paper and demanded to know what happened to ‘the little girl who lived by the seashore’.
“It seems that the ruse of leaving half-completed stories in the typewriter spurred me to learn to read.”
Suzanna’s debut novel is a stunningly complex and engrossing story packed with psychological twists and turns.
Set between Hong Kong and the southern counties of England, The Guilty Present tells of a mysterious disappearance and two of the characters caught up in the search.
Hong Kong party girl Tassen has lost her lover, while her lover’s former friend Christopher is looking for answers to the murder of a child decades earlier.
Suzanna added: “I was inspired to write my novel by a visit to Hong Kong years ago - and I wanted to juxtapose this remarkable environment with my own experience of growing up in a small towns in the shires.
“The Guilty Present is a murder/mystery with psychological themes.
“One of these is guilt, and how it can consume people who have made mistakes in the past.
“Another is insecurity, and how it can stop people from having a clear perspective.
“Most of the characters share the trait of appearing to fit comfortably into society whilst feeling like outsiders or misfits.”
Suzanna has been so encouraged by the feedback for The Guilty Present, she is already working on a sequel.
