Closing the Clean Power Gap

Construction equipment is estimated to be responsible for 7% of NOx emissions in London, 25% of which is due to generators. Whilst Temporary Builders’ Supplies (TBS) are a great grid solution, there can sometimes be a sustainability gap between site mobilisation and TBS availability. Battery storage manufacturer Off Grid Energy has teamed up with services specialist Sustainable Advantage to close the clean power gap.
Whilst Sustainable Advantage work to accelerate the TBS or permanent grid power, Off Grid Energy connect a battery to the generator reducing running hours and significantly improving fuel efficiency. There are reductions in emissions and noise combined with safety improvements from reduced tanker movements.
Both technologies can save costs. With the TBS in place providing a constant supply of energy to site, the battery system can remain available covering the short periods of high demand that the TBS alone would normally struggle to deliver, such as crane start-up.
Alan Hunte, Business Development Director at Sustainable Advantage said “We’ve seen regulation in major cities on the use of non-road mobile machinery. London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone came into effect in April to increase controls on NO2 with five other UK cities following suit later this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if, in line with the Clean Air Strategy, the Government introduces regulations covering emissions from all construction site equipment. The combination of accelerating grid power and Off Grid Energy’s battery solutions offer a more sustainable alternative to a generator alone.”

Our technology provides an easy win for organisations wanting to reduce operating costs as well as demonstrate environmental improvements under regulatory regimes including the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), which replaced CRCEES last month (April 2019).”
