Northampton writer’s thriller Rises up book charts

Pressbox (Press Release) - A spell in Finland has provided the inspiration for a Northampton lecturer to embark on writing his own seven-book series of thrillers.
Robert Webber’s highly-accomplished debut war-time novel, Carlton’s Rise, has just entered the top ten of Amazon’s historical fiction charts.
And the 63-year-old grandfather is already working on both the second and third books in his planned heptalogy.
Dr Webber’s success with his first full-length novel comes as no surprise as he won two county-wide writing competitions during his youth.
He explained: “I wrote a poem about the Zulu wars at about ten years old, and a short story called Death Defying Death when I was 12.
“Both won the Coventry Standard’s children's authors prize in 1966 and 1968.
“But I didn’t start writing seriously, which was non-fiction, until about 2000.”
Robert and his Russian wife, Alla, had their son, Nicolai, while they were living in Finland.
It was during this period that Dr Webber began devising the plot for his highly-accomplished debut adventure novel.
Carlton’s Rise is a gripping and highly-convincing introduction of spy Alex Carlton, who is charged with playing a vital role in bringing down the Nazis.
Robert continued: “Alex is the son of Russian nobility, who was born in Finland as he and his mother escaped the Russian revolution in 1917.
“They made their way to England where he grew up under the protection of a society of white Russians.
“Eventually, in 1939, he was recruited into the British secret service to be trained for one of Winston Churchill's pet projects – his return to Finland as an agent for his adopted country.”
To compensate for still working full-time Dr Webber often rises every morning at 3am to write for up to four hours.
As well as Robert’s first novel entering the charts, his efforts have received warm praise from initial readers.
He is currently midway through writing the sequel to Carlton’s Rise and has completed his research for the third book in the series.
Dr Webber added: “Carlton’s Rise is book one of seven.
“I am already writing book two, have researched book three, know where book four is going, and have a guide as to how the final three books will develop.”
