A ‘little odd, piglet looking puppy’ has not only transformed Elaine’s Jacques’ life but also turned her into a published author.
Her debut book, Paws for Thought, has just been released to critical acclaim with a string of five-star reviews being offered by captivated readers.
The humorous and often touching collection of short-stories is written through the eyes of Elaine’s ‘best friend’, Monty.
Since its recent publication, Paws for Thought has been described by critics as ‘thoroughly entertaining’, ‘a wonderful, uplifting read’ and ‘couldn’t put it down’.
Elaine, from Somerset, said: “Monty has been my inspiration, without him there would be no book - the book is testament to him.
“Watching Monty emerge from adolescence into adulthood has been a pleasure to watch - his experiences, reactions, likes and dislikes are wonderful and deserve to be written about.
“The book is ultimately written on his behalf.”
Border collie Monty was the runt of the litter with his ‘piglet’ looks.
But since coming home with Elaine, he has quickly developed into a fun-loving and loyal companion.
Written from Monty’s perspective, Paws for Thought provides an insight on exactly what gets his tail wagging.
Perfectly paced with light-hearted humour, Elaine’s debut has the charm and unpredictability to keep readers hooked throughout Monty’s adventures.
Elaine, whose favourite book is Ernest Hemingway’s memoirs A Moveable Feast, also has Shakespeare to thank for her writing ability.
She explained: “I wasn’t the brightest as a child and struggled with reading and writing.
“My English teacher took the time to give me some one-to-one tuition after class and had me read William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 29: When, in Disgrace with Fortune and Men’s Eyes.
“We would read each line, think about the meaning and discuss it before moving to the next line.
“I loved that poem and is what gave me the confidence and passion for reading and writing.”
Following the encouraging reception for her debut book, Elaine is currently contemplating writing a sequel to Paws for Thought.
