Pressbox (Press Release) -
No sooner has Norfolk food safety auditor Kevin Shortland released his debut novel than he is back with the highly-anticipated sequel.
Despite winning praise for his writing during his 1970 and 80s schooldays, the father-of-three waited until he was approaching 60 years old before finally completing and publishing the five-star-rated Kevin Wilks and the Power Stone.
The fantasy adventure novel was greeted with a string of glowing reviews.
Less than a year on, Kevin has just released the second part of his planned six-book series, Kevin Wilks and the Mirror of Souls.
The 59-year-old said: “This is the book where Kevin Wilks comes of age.
“Thrown into the world of magic and mystery, he now must start believing things he had only read about in books.
“This is hard for Kevin as he only believes in things that are told or shown to him with further evidence as proof.”
Kevin, who gained accolades in catering and for food industry training, has been creating stories and storyboards since his school days.
And the practice over the decades has paid dividends as his first two books showcase his masterful ability for characterisation, exciting plots and perfect pacing.
Kevin, whose favourite authors include J.K. Rowling and John Grisham, said: “I have always jotted down simple stories right from my secondary school days but never thought about getting anything published.
“Some teachers read them and gave them glowing reports, but I never thought of asking my parents to help get any of them printed.
“Some of the events in the books also go back to my schooldays and the friendship with some of the characters that feature.”
His debut novel followed Kevin Wilks after being encouraged by his older brother to embark on a magical quest set by the greatest wizard of all, Merlin.
And the second book is a further slice of gripping fantastical adventure as Kevin yet again accepts Merlin’s challenge.
During chapters packed with twists and turns, the protagonist encounters many magicians and legends who were thought to have been confined to the history books.
Critics have described Kevin Wilks and the Mirror of Souls as ‘excellent’, ‘superb’ and ‘cannot wait until the third book’.
Kevin is currently working on the next part of his six-book series.
