Renowned Equity Scholar Joins Faculty at Illinois State University

Terrell Strayhorn, one of the nation's leading subject matter experts on racial equity, diversity, inclusion, and sense of belonging specifically, will join the faculty of the Department of Educational Administration & Foundations (EAF) in the College of Education at Illinois State University, as Professor of Higher Education. Author of 11 books, including 'College Students' Sense of Belonging: A Key to Educational Success for all Students' and 'The Evolving Challenges of Black College Students,' Dr. Strayhorn has published over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and national reports. He is one of the most prolific and influential contemporary scholar-theorists in the fields of education, social psychology, and student success.
Named one of the country's leading voices by Diverse:Issues in Higher Education and a "Bridge-Builder" between academic- and student affairs by ACPA's Commission, Strayhorn's research has been cited, circulated, or funded by the most premiere agencies in the world including Lumina Foundation, National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE), Annie E. Casey Foundation, National Science Foundation, and European Association of Institutional Research (EAIR), among others. He has served as ACPA Director of Research & Scholarship, Chair of AERA's Research Focus on Black Education Special Interest Group (SIG), Chair of ASHE's Council on Ethnic Participation (CEP) and currently serves on the Children's Defense Fund's Research Advisory Board for Freedom Schools.
A respected thought-leader, Professor Strayhorn has been quoted in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, Huffington Post, Diverse, and Higher Ed Dive, to name a few. He has advised hundreds of university presidents, school leaders, and corporations on ways to boost belonging, achieve DEIB targets, and improve organizational health. Professionally, Strayhorn has served in a number of significant faculty and academic leadership roles at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, The Ohio State University, LeMoyne-Owen College, and most recently, Virginia Union University where he has worked as Provost, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Professor of Urban Education, and inaugural Director of the Center for the Study of HBCUs. He is Diversity Scholar-in-Residence at Harrisburg Area College and Faculty Affiliate at Rutgers' Center for MSIs. He earned his bachelors in music and religious studies from the University of Virginia (UVA), masters in education policy from UVA, and a PhD in education from Virginia Tech.
