Nial Atkin is a very talented, intelligent young man who is very loved by his family and friends. Due to Nial’s current significant Mental Health difficulties he is currently stranded in Sweden. Nial’s family are very grateful to Jerry for finding Nial and the dedication he has shown to helping Nial. Nial’s family and Jerry’s priority is to get Nial the long term help and support he requires as well as return him home into a safe, secure situation where long term help is set up for him.
Nial, when well, is a very private man. He would not want his details being published by the press and currently due to his significant mental health concerns can not possibly consent to his details being published by the press. In addition it is the belief of those who know Nial best that knowing this is happening will upset Nial greatly and is likely to hinder his recovery. It is also unfortunately true that due to the fact that Mental Health stigma is very real, this press coverage may in fact harm Nials future with regards to work and life. Nial is highly intelligent and has great potential for his future with the right support and medical intervention.
The family is keen to convey that all of the correct and proper agencies have been contacted, and that Nial's best interests are at all times being considered as the foremost concern. There are a multitude of people and professionals working to ensure that Nial is safely returned home to the right care so that he can recover and live a happy, prosperous life. The family requests that the press refrain from any more press coverage, and that any press coverage is removed from all online publications thereby protecting a vulnerable man and quite possibly saving his life. The consequences of press coverage is likely to cause direct harm to someone who is both vulnerable and unable to consent due to his current mental state.
Nial’s family would like to thank the Swedish healthcare system, and are very relieved to confirm that Nial is currently receiving Psychiatric assistance and support in Sweden. Both Jerry and Nial’s family are grateful for the action taken by Swedish Mental Health Services and request that the public respect Nial’s right to keep his treatment private.
Those who are closest to Nial appreciate the concern and care that has flooded in worldwide. However, right now they need the time and space to focus on getting Nial home safely and getting him the treatment he requires. Nial’s family ask that any further press articles do not mention the family by name and that they are sensitive to Nial’s right to privacy and the very delicate situation.
That said, Nial’s family are keen that any articles regarding this situation focus on the continued stigma of Mental Illness and the need for better, more supportive Mental Health Services across the board.
