Like most things in David Beeley’s prized allotment, his venture into writing has also grown impressively well.
The 73-year-old’s debut novel, Secrets, Lies and Rhubarb Pies, not only attracted a string of rave reviews but it has now blossomed into a five-star rated trilogy.
Following last year’s sequel, Secrets, Lies and Two Leg Byes, the retired headteacher from South Gloucestershire has just released the concluding part of his three-book series.
And yet again the highly-anticipated, Secrets, Lies and Seagull Cries, has been met with critical acclaim from captivated readers.
Reviewers have described the final part of the Wath Mills Allotments trilogy as ‘entertaining on many levels’, ‘an exceptionally good read’ and ‘… I laughed, I cried’.
Secrets, Lies and Seagull Cries takes the colourful characters of Newhill school to David’s own home county of Yorkshire for more gripping adventures.
David, whose favourite authors include Tim Murgatroyd, Alexander McCall Smith and Larry McMurty, said: “We meet old and new friends including Nora Noodle whose life is a cheerful struggle against poverty and adversity.
“She finds a first, tender and gentle love with a quiet Polish boy.
“Newhill school's residential trip to Yorkshire is an impossible dream for Nora but a broken leg and code 604 intervene.”
David, who has harboured ambitions to become a published writer since his school days, only picked up the pen two years ago to impress one of his granddaughters.
The extremely positive feedback from readers provided the encouragement to turn his stand-alone debut into the trilogy.
As with the previous two parts, Secrets, Lies and Seagull Cries demonstrates David’s natural ability for storytelling which is enhanced by his subtle humour, vivid characterisation, sharp eye for imagery and his customary sprinkling of unexpected twists.
The grandfather-of-three added: “Nora's teacher, Daisy Morgan, is enduring a cold marriage and takes refuge with Phil her mentor, a black American with Sioux ancestry, and a mysterious shadow wife.
“Clovermount is a dramatic setting for criminal gangs, ghosts, allegations of child abuse, kidnapping, and an escaped prisoner intent on revenge.
“It is a time of joy, of young love, humour, divorce, and new beginnings.
“It is a time of hope, a time of death and deep sadness.”
Away from writing David continues to support his beloved Rotherham United, although a cancer diagnosis has forced him to hang up his marathon running shoes.
He has begun to write his fourth book following the completion of the Wath Mills Allotments trilogy.
