Pressbox (Press Release) -
Looking at life from the outside has become a habit for Newcastle poet and photographer Steven Morris.
But a recent relationship break-up has led the 51-year-old to pen his first chart-topping anthology.
Steven’s third collection of thought-provoking poems, The Pursuit of Happiness, has beaten off some of the country’s best-known writers to reach number one in Amazon’s poetry chart.
Steven’s previous poetry collections, Consummatum Est and Surviving the Madness, were both well received.
But his latest book, which came in the wake of a failed relationship, has surpassed all of his previous celebrated work.
Steven said: “The idea for The Pursuit of Happiness came after another failed relationship, and how it made me feel about life.
“The first verse of the book came to me whilst asleep.
“I awoke, and the whole verse was there in my head.
“I knew at that moment that I had to write another book of poetry about how I was feeling.”
The Pursuit of Happiness is a deeply personal journey through life from the outside, where relationships are for others and happiness is only to be observed.
Steven, who has spoken openly in the past about his own mental health issues, eloquently evaluates the sadness that isolation brings within his stanzas while offering his own optimism.
Steven, who is a wildlife photographer in Northumberland, added: “The Pursuit of Happiness is about a lonely, discontented man who walks through life, struggling to find happiness.
“He feels completely empty and unfulfilled, and all his life he has felt invisible around other human beings.
“He does not feel valued or understood.
“And he is not leading the life he wishes to lead, or the life he deserves.
“He has long-since accepted that his life may never get any better than this, that he is living his destiny.
“He is resigned to his fate, but will never accept defeat - he is strong and determined, and he is extremely positive and romantic about what may lie beyond this world, beyond suffering, waiting for us all.
“He travels towards the future with a smile on his face.”
As well as reaching number one in the poetry charts, The Pursuit of Happiness has been well received by reviewers.
Reviewer R Ploude stated: “Any book that causes me to think about life is a good book.
“The Pursuit of Happiness is one such book.”
