WISTA International signs MOU with APEC Seafarers Excellence Network
The leading global body for women in the maritime world – WISTA International – has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with APEC Seafarers Excellence Network (APEC SEN) to promote and develop joint networks to support both bodies.
The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation for Seafarers Excellence Network (APEC SEN) is a comprehensive network that promotes the well-qualified, and efficient maritime workforce that maintains the highest standard of the professionalism and ethical conduct in the Asia region and globally.
The MoU was signed on Monday 8 March 2021 and outlines the collaborative and cooperative synergies to support the alignment to the WISTA Mission, the APEC Pillars on Empowerment of Women, and commitment to achieve the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The objectives of this co-operation between two of the most respected groups in maritime campaigning and support are to build a community that will attract and support women in the APEC Region. They will also work together to establish a Mentor-Mentee Network that will empower future generation of maritime women professionals through mentoring seminars and/or international conference via webinars with the main focus on topics related to maritime transport.
Both bodies will work to establish participants from the National WISTA Associations (NWAs) to participate in the APEC Seafarers Excellence Network (SEN) On-Board Training to foster competent young Future Maritime Global Leaders as part of the APEC SEN project.
WISTA’s work in gender diversity and their role in supporting women in the maritime sector will be a major part of the co-operation with APEC SEN in establishing the development of a Certificate Course on Empowering Women in the global maritime industry.
Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, President of WISTA INTERNATIONAL welcomed the announcement of the MoU:
“This is a very welcome addition to the strategy we have of working with leading maritime organisations to support diversity in this vital global industry. - Mass Data Security Breach – Now is The Time to Destroy Your Hard Drives
- In the past two years, there have been several high-profile security breaches that have affected thousands of people. You’ve probably heard about the Equifax breach that occurred in September 2017 and may even be aware of the Yahoo breaches that occurred in 2013 and 2014. In addition to these, there are others as well. It's a disaster. The credit reporting agency announced that it was hacked in July, and potentially 143 million people have had their personal information stolen. The hackers got their hands on names, social security numbers, birth dates, addresses–the whole nine yards. And they're selling it!
A massive data security breach has resulted in the personal information of over 145 million Americans being compromised. If you're a small business owner, this news could feel like a personal attack on your company. With global data security breaches becoming more common, there's no doubt that even small businesses need to be on high alert.
Online data security is an area that is always in flux. New hacks are announced every day, and hundreds of websites get hacked every year. We are living in a period of unprecedented data security breaches, and the risks are only expanding. So what can you do to protect your business? In this article, we offer 5 hard drive destruction methods that will help you stay ahead of hackers.
1. Degaussing
If you no longer use your hard drives, you'll be able to modify them. This involves using a strong device referred to as a degausser. The device uses a powerful magnetic attraction to scramble the hard drive platter. This way, it can not be used or scanned by anyone. Since data is stored using magnetic principles, demagnetisation simply alters the magnetic direction of the drive.
2. Shredding
Hard drive shredding is one of the most functional ways to destroy a hard drive. It involves running the drive through a machine known as a shredder, which cuts it into small bits. Since hard drives store data on a platter, cutting it into tiny pieces renders the drive and any data on ithat useless. Some shredders additionally compress the shredded material into compact forms for disposal.
3. Melting
Melting hard drives involves dipping them in acid to demolish their platters and housing. Though this is one of the foremost effective hard drive destruction techniques, it is also one of the most dangerous ways. This is because the procedure involves using hydrochloric and nitric acids. Both acids are murderous to the environment. This involves human skin, so you must be careful with the appropriate protective gear. Generally, this process is not acceptable.
4. Disintegration
Organizations wanting to destroy highly classified data, sometimes select disintegration as one of their preferred hard drive destruction techniques. The method is carried out using a disintegrator– a machine with a carrier system and knife that slices hard drives into smaller particles. Malicious actors won’t be able to access the drives or data on them as a result of the disintegrated things can’t be reassembled.
5. Drilling
Putting holes in a hard drive destroys its platter and makes sure that no-one can use the data on it. It is also one of the better ways to go about the hard drive demolition process because you don’t need to use any complicated machines.
Things to Keep in Mind When Demolishing Hard Drives
Selecting a way of data destruction isn't a choice that ought to be taken gently. Depending on the business, bound ways that of destroying data could also be preferable due to effectiveness, cost, and different factors.

- eCom Scotland’s advice to those wanting to do business with post-Trump USA
- Wendy Edie, the Managing Director of the digital learning and assessment specialist eCom Scotland, is joining some of Scotland’s top business leaders to discuss how to be successful at doing business with customers in the United States of America.
Wendy is speaking during a virtual event organised by the Scottish North American Business Council (SNABC), which is a Chapter within the wider British American Business Council. The event is scheduled from 2pm to 5.30pm on 11th February.
According to the organisers, significant opportunities exist for Scottish firms to do business in the USA across a range of key sectors, including life sciences, electronics, technology, financial services, food and drink. Currently, the USA is Scotland's top international trading partner, accounting for some 17.1% of its exports, worth £5.5bn.
The event will focus on aspects of trading with the USA including how to identify routes to market; financing the trade and getting paid; legal aspects of trading in the USA, and protecting intellectual property in the USA. It will also discuss cultural issues to consider when expanding into the USA and how remote working in a Covid19 world can help companies make vital connections.
“eCom Scotland has experience of the USA market through its subsidiary, eCom USA,” said Wendy. “Being a small to medium sized business, we’ve found that it’s important to find the right location in the USA from which to target business growth.
“In our experience, the USA's size - embracing four time zones across 50 states - and vast cultural differences across regions means it must be treated as a series of regional markets, with different characteristics and business practices,” she added. “Hopefully, my fellow speakers and I can offer some practical tips and guidance to help others to set up, grow and develop their business.”
The SNABC’s Executive Director, Allan Hogarth, said, “We look forward to engaging with President Biden’s new administration. We have plenty of shared agendas, including the crucial challenges on climate change and COP26 being hosted in Glasgow later this year. The US offers opportunities for ambitious Scottish firms and we look forward to working with eCom Scotland and others to make that journey an easier and more productive one.”

In China, Ascott has also achieved an 80% year-on-year growth in units compared to 2019 . Since October 2020, Ascott added more than 4,900 units across 23 properties. This includes over 3,800 units across 17 properties in China. Ascott will make its first foray into the city of Yangzhou while expanding in other cities such as Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Wuhan. Among the newly secured properties are two rental housing properties in Shanghai and Hangzhou, marking Ascott’s increased presence in China’s high growth rental housing sector. As China continues to urbanise, an estimated 252 million tenants will make up a RMB3 trillion rental market by 2025 . Outside of China, Ascott has sealed contracts for over 1,000 new units across 6 properties. This includes over 70 properties with more than 15,000 units in Asia Pacific which is expected to lead the global economic recovery. We will continue to look for opportunities to expand our presence through management contracts, franchises, strategic alliances, and stand ready to seize good investment opportunities.”
Mr Goh added: “While we were not spared the short-term operational impact of COVID-19, we believe that the fundamental demand for lodging remains intact and will bounce back quickly once the global pandemic is brought under control. In the meantime, we continue to seek new opportunities amid the crisis. We have capitalised on Ascott’s well-designed and spacious serviced apartments to tap on domestic demand while pursuing new businesses. Ascott’s new businesses such as the ‘Work in Residence’ and ‘Space-as-a-Service’ initiatives have generated more than S$91 million in 2020. With the global roll out of vaccines and testing protocols to facilitate the gradual resumption of international travel, Ascott will emerge stronger and deliver greater value for our partners and guests.”
Mr Tan Tze Shang, Ascott’s Managing Director for China and Head of Business Development for China, said: “Ascott’s business in China continues to lead our global expansion. We have achieved record growth in new units and about half of the properties opened globally are in China. In key cities, our properties such as Ascott Heng Shan Shanghai, Ascott Aden Shenzhen, Ascott IFC Guangzhou, and Raffles City Residence Beijing, have strong average occupancy rate of over 90%3. In 2021, we are slated to open three lyf coliving properties in Hangzhou, Shanghai and Xi’an to cater to the fast-expanding demographic of millennial and millennial-minded customers. The first of our three rental housing properties in China is also slated to open in Hangzhou in 3Q 2021. These new lodging options will enable Ascott to expand our customer reach and product offerings to business partners in China.”
Mr Tan added: “Ascott’s expansion into the rental housing segment taps on the growing demand from young, mobile workers as well as returning students from abroad who are looking to rent quality fully furnished homes in the tier one and tier two cities on a long-term basis in China. We have also infused new technologies into the more traditional rental housing sector by enabling our guests to pay rent and utilities, submit requests and book facilities digitally to increase guest satisfaction and improve operational efficiency.”
In 2020, Ascott opened 25 new properties adding over 3,900 units to its global inventory. This includes the opening of 10 properties with more than 1,800 units in China. Leveraging digital capabilities to support Ascott’s growth
Amidst the COVID-19 situation, Ascott continued to leverage and upgrade its digital capabilities to support Ascott’s growth, enhance its guests’ experience and ensure their safety.
Ascott completed the migration of its customer relationship management and property management systems to a cloud enterprise solution. The move enables Ascott to increase operational efficiency and further enhance guest experience across its properties worldwide. The check-in process is shortened, and the creation of an automated workflow management system allows efficient tracking and management of operations such as housekeeping services in real-time. A new data analytics platform was also introduced to provide greater value for Ascott’s corporate clients.
Ascott’s service robot, Aria will be deployed to selected properties in Singapore in 2021. Aria is one of the contactless technologies that Ascott has introduced to its properties in China. Guests can call upon Aria to perform a suite of tasks such as concierge services, leading guests to the rooms or facilities, delivering clean laundry and packages, and refilling room supplies. Aria is also able to interface independently with the property’s vending machine to bring guests their ordered items via a mobile app.
To minimise physical contact and reduce check-in time, Ascott has installed self check-in kiosk with facial recognition technology in selected properties in China and Singapore. In Singapore, Ascott has worked with Singapore Tourism Board to install an E-Visitor Authentication system at Ascott Orchard Singapore where guests can scan their passports at the kiosk and their data will be sent to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority to verify the validity of their stay, providing seamless check-in. In addition, Ascott has launched an automated room key card verification system which enables guests in China to simply tap their room key cards on the card reader installed in the property’s breakfast lounge and head straight for their breakfast without the need for its staff to verify the guests’ breakfast entitlements manually.
Ascott’s loyalty programme Ascott Star Rewards (ASR) tapped on numerous digital initiatives to support the company’s expansion, increasing ASR members by 45% over 2019. The new Discover ASR mobile app is a one-stop 24/7 digital concierge, providing greater value and flexibility for ASR members to enhance their experience with Ascott. Through the app, ASR members can search for special deals and book their stay at about 200 participating properties in over 25 countries and more than 85 cities. Guests can also access their apartments via the app’s digital key feature. Other ASR initiatives supporting Ascott’s growth include the purchase of ASR points online, as well as the ASR Elite Status Match and CapitaStar-ASR Points Exchange programmes which allow ASR members to gain more points or upgrade their membership tier.

Mr Jason Leow, President, Singapore & International, CapitaLand Group, said: “The divestment of these mature malls and office asset is part of CapitaLand’s capital recycling strategy to unlock value by reinvesting the capital into new growth opportunities such as the logistics sector in Japan. By paring down our exposure in Japan’s retail sector and leveraging our logistics experience in markets such as Singapore, Australia and the United Kingdom to expand into the new economy sector in Japan, we are responding swiftly to shifting market trends and consumer behaviours, positioning CapitaLand for future growth. Despite COVID-19, we have crossed our capital recycling target of S$3 billion and remain focused on divesting non-core assets opportunistically. CapitaLand will continue to actively reconstitute and optimise our portfolio to deliver long-term value for our stakeholders.”
Mr Gerald Yong, Chief Executive Officer, CapitaLand International, said: “The logistics sector in Japan presents significant opportunities for CapitaLand. The global pandemic has accelerated the growth of e-commerce and the logistics sector has been a prime beneficiary of this trend. Vacancy rates of the logistics sector in Greater Tokyo have reached a historical low of 0.4%. The logistics sector is set to continue its growth momentum as more customers transact online. We aim to achieve meaningful scale over time by leveraging Mitsui & Co. Real Estate Ltd’s local knowledge and access to business opportunities to grow our logistics portfolio in Japan.”
Mr Yoshiyasu Furukawa, President and CEO of Mitsui & Co. Real Estate Ltd, said: “We are pleased to partner with CapitaLand on their first logistics project in Japan. The combination of Mitsui & Co. Real Estate Ltd’s extensive experience in Japan’s logistics sector and CapitaLand’s position as one of Asia’s largest diversified real estate groups is a winning partnership. We aim to deliver a modern and quality logistics development in 4Q 2022 and deepen our collaboration in the future.”
CapitaLand’s Presence in Japan and Korea
CapitaLand has been operating in Japan and Korea for close to 20 years. Post divestment, CapitaLand will retain S$3.8 billion of assets under management (AUM) in Japan and S$2.0 billion of AUM in Korea.
In Japan, CapitaLand has two malls in Greater Tokyo - Olinas Mall and Seiyu & Sundrug Higashimatsuyama. CapitaLand also has four office assets in Tokyo and Yokohama. Through CapitaLand’s wholly owned lodging business unit, The Ascott Limited (Ascott) and its hospitality trust, Ascott Residence Trust (ART), the Group has a strong portfolio of over 5,600 units across more than 30 serviced residences, hotels and rental housing properties in nine cities, including gateway cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.
In Korea, besides being the asset manager for ICON Yeoksam, CapitaLand owns three other office buildings in Seoul through its private funds. The office buildings are Citibank Centre and Jongro Place which are operational as well as ICON Cheonggye which is under development. Through Ascott and ART, the Group has five serviced residences and hotels with more than 1,400 units in Jeju, Seongnam and Seoul.

- CapitaLand recognised for global sustainability leadership on Dow Jones Sustainability Indices
- CapitaLand has been listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the ninth consecutive year, reinforcing its reputation as a global sustainability leader in real estate. Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) track the performance of the world's leading companies in the areas of economic, environmental and social factors.
CapitaLand has also maintained its listing on the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index (DJSI Asia Pacific) for the 12th consecutive year. This makes CapitaLand the first and longest standing company in Singapore to be listed on the DJSI Asia Pacific.
CapitaLand’s inclusion in the DJSI is tied to the interest rates across four of CapitaLand’s sustainability-linked loans totalling S$600 million. With CapitaLand maintaining its listing on the DJSI, along with the achievement of other environmental, social and governance (ESG) indicators, CapitaLand will receive interest rate savings from the reduced interest rates on these sustainability-linked loans.
CapitaLand has also retained its listing in the MSCI World ESG Leaders and MSCI World Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Index in 2020. This is CapitaLand’s seventh inclusion in the rankings. The MSCI Global Sustainability Indices are designed for investors seeking exposure to companies with strong sustainability profiles. It comprises companies focusing on products or services that contribute to a more environmentally sustainable economy by making a more efficient use of limited global natural resources.
First real estate company in Asia (excluding Japan) to have its carbon reduction targets validated by Science Based Targets initiative
CapitaLand is the first real estate company in Asia (excluding Japan), and in Singapore to have its carbon reduction targets set using a science-based approach validated by Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), for a ‘well-below 2 degrees Celsius’ scenario. The scenario is in line with the Paris Climate Agreement to keep global temperature rise ‘well-below 2 degrees Celsius’ in this century.
Mr Andrew Lim, Group Chief Financial Officer, CapitaLand Group said: “At CapitaLand, sustainability is at the core of what we do. We measure our sustainability efforts against global benchmarks such as Dow Jones Sustainability Indices and embed sustainability into our cost of funding. Being consistently recognised as one of the world’s most sustainable real estate companies further encourages us to step up our efforts in sustainability. The interest rate savings from our sustainability-linked loans can be redeployed to support our operations and ESG initiatives, spurring better sustainability outcomes. Having our carbon reduction targets validated by the common international standard, SBTi, paves the way for more financial products and services that we could work with our like-minded capital partners to roll out. CapitaLand will continue to build on our sustainability achievements to create a greater positive impact on the environment and society.”
Ms Lynette Leong, Chief Sustainability Officer, CapitaLand Group said: “As a global sustainable real estate leader, CapitaLand continues to break new grounds by being the first in Asia excluding Japan to have our carbon reduction targets validated by SBTi to keep global temperature rise ‘well-below 2 degrees Celsius’. To achieve these carbon reduction targets and other resource efficiency aims outlined in CapitaLand’s 2030 Sustainability Master Plan, leveraging innovation and technology is key. With our inaugural CapitaLand Sustainability X Challenge, companies from across the world are invited to work with CapitaLand to bring their sustainability innovations to life. As we step up on our on-going sustainability practices, the CapitaLand Sustainability X Challenge will amplify our sustainability efforts, enabling CapitaLand to contribute more tangibly in the global fight against climate change and future-proof our organisation.”
CapitaLand’s SBTi validated targets are to reduce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 28% by 2030 since 2019. It has also committed to reducing scope 3 GHG emissions from capital goods by 22% per square metre by 2030 since 2019.
These new carbon reduction targets complement CapitaLand’s current aim of achieving a 78% reduction in carbon emissions intensity by 2030 outlined in CapitaLand’s 2030 Sustainability Master Plan.
Global open call for sustainability innovation through CapitaLand Sustainability X Challenge
To accelerate its sustainability efforts to achieve its carbon reduction targets and other targets outlined in the Master Plan, CapitaLand has launched a global open call for sustainability innovation through its inaugural CapitaLand Sustainability X Challenge (CSXC).
This is the first sustainability challenge by a Singapore real estate company on a global scale. The CSXC also aims to encourage sustainability innovation and collaboration within the built environment.
Companies across the world with suitable sustainability innovations can participate in the CSXC from now till February 2021. Participants can join the CSXC by submitting their proposed innovation to address any of the seven challenge statements developed by CapitaLand to meet its global business needs.
Two winning solutions will each receive S$50,000 to fund their projects, mentoring by a CapitaLand business leader and the exclusive opportunity to pilot, test and implement innovations at select CapitaLand properties in over 220 cities and 30 countries. The projects will be assessed based on the impact, potential outcomes and depth of innovation. They should also be scalable and effectively deployed across the geographies that CapitaLand operates in and its different asset types. Other shortlisted participants will stand a chance to trial their innovations at CapitaLand’s global network of properties.

- From its beginning in 2015, the proficient Immigration application has attracted a great deal of attention worldwide. Well, this is sometimes connected to the enormous advantages that it provides to overseas Immigrants. These days, the application in Canada has become the most aggressive Immigration on the planet.
As a consequence of numerous entrances and program through time, we've begun to ask crucial questions concerning why some people don't get chosen at the conclusion of the procedure. Why does some candidate remain in the swimming pool for as long? Why can the app favor a specific pair of skilled people when compared with other people? Do these applicants know the needs of this Canada Express Entry prior to implementing?
Employing the most effective Canadian immigration advisors in Dubai can offer your program with a increase of expertise nevertheless, you have to comprehend the benefit and disadvantages of the program prior to applying.
Benefits
From research, feedbacks, and also the composition of this app, below are the virtues of this expert Immigration application:
A certain path to citizenship and citizenship from Canada: Besides additional Canadian immigration applications, this is the only application that provides qualified applicants a permanent residency visa. This suggests that the successful applicants will appreciate the advantage of migrating together with the members of the household to Canada. In any case, once successful applicants obtain their invitation to employ, the processing to get the visa requires a shorter period compared to other immigration applications.
There is absolutely not any prejudice in the Immigration procedure: this really is a exceptional facet of the expert program. Asides, there's a CRS calculator which can help you to calculate your own points and determine if you are eligible for the program. Moreover, candidates may also check their job or abilities to understand whether it's now in demand. Cons
regardless of the successes listed in the program up to now, it has some drawbacks and demerits into a particular degree. Besides that, measures aren't yet set up to connect qualified applicants with prospective Canadian companies that need their abilities. Such an applicant needs to experience the project banks, which demands a regular update.
It doesn't prefer international students and new graduates: These types of people are considered possible contributors to any country's economy as well as sustainability. However, as a consequence of the required working expertise demanded from the Canada immigration plan, it's neglected to take under account the interest of new graduates. A few of those graduates may do better and have the required skills but will find a very low position in the CRS because of their feeble working expertise.
Age and Marital Bias: applicants over age 35 has lesser odds of choice in the program (except in cases where they have a solid point from various other variables ). That is because the factors decrease since the era exceeds 32. Moreover, there's also prejudice in marital status.
The Canadian immigration plan for skilled people has turned out to be a fantastic initiative since its beginning. But, we expect to see following changes in the program concerning the prejudice concerning age and expertise. In any event, the app is just one of the very best and most aggressive immigration applications for skilled immigrants. You may either employ as a individual or utilize the help of Immigration Consultants from Dubai to ensure a successful program.

- Giti's USA Plant Gains Two Quality Management Certifications
- Giti Tire Manufacturing (USA) Ltd. has received two key quality management certifications for – ISO 9001-2015 and IATF 16949-2016.
ISO 9001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for quality management systems (QMS). Organizations use the standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. It is the most popular standard in the ISO 9000 series and the only standard in the series to which organizations can certify.
The International Automotive Task Force (IATF) established new technical specifications for automotive sector quality management systems in October 2016 with the implementation of 16949-2016. It is one of the most widely used international standards in the automotive industry, harmonizing the different assessment and certification systems in the global automotive supply chain.
“The amount of hard work by our team members in gaining these two certifications, which is extended to other operations like sales, warehouse and R&D, cannot be over-stated", described Carole Wilbert, Senior Manager of QA, Giti Tire Manufacturing (USA) Ltd. "It was a Herculean task but well worth it because these two certifications demonstrate to our OE and replacement tire customers that our quality standards are among the best in the world”
Giti’s passenger and light truck tire manufacturing plant in Richburg, SC, started production in Q4 2017, and together with the adjacent Giti Tire R&D Center, produce “American-engineered, American-made” tires for OE and replacement customers throughout North America.
