- Revolutionising conveyor concept by Avancon
- When the business of the South Korean Pharmaceutical Company Hanmi was increasing, the order processing and picking lines were too slow to handle all these orders in time. Their 10 years old equipment had to be replaced and the System integrator SMCORE, one of the largest in Korea, proposed them the new and most modern Avancon ZPC-Conveyor concept. This incomparable system offers many benefits. Now, after one year in operation, everything meets HanmiÕs expectations and the company is very satisfied with this solution by Avancon.
South Korean has the 10th largest international Pharmaceuticals Market and is the 3rd biggest in Asia. This Pharmaceutics Market will grow to more than 20 Billion US$ in the year 2020.
One of the top pharmaceutical manufacture in South Korea is the fast-growing Hanmi Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. They are very aggressive in R&D and in the automation facility. Hanmi handle e-commerce B2B, selling to drug stores and wholesale.
Their logistic center in Paltan, South Korea, operating by their subsidiary Online-Pharm Co., Ltd., handle more than 10000 orders / 13000 boxes during peak days.
The existing picking systems and the conveyors of the Hanmi affiliate Company were running for more than 10 years. Their business had been increased significantly in the last decade and they had problems to meet the increasing demand with their picking and logistic task.
The system integrator for this project was SMCORE Inc, (former SMC, Smart Mechatronics Core), which is one of the major logistics system suppliers in South Korea. They installed the shelving and the pick-to-light system and took over the scope of Integration.
SMCORE offered with Avancon a new idea to solve this issue by suggesting the picking zone concept using the new and exceptional Avancon Conveyor system.
With this new solution, their logistics Òbottle neckÓ problem has been eliminated. The avant-garde Avancon ZPC (Zone Powered Conveyor) System provides more dynamic buffer space with its ZPC-function. In addition, the new solution includes a looping system.
When a certain picking zone is full, the next box goes automatically around the loop and tries to enter the same zone later, when the free space is available.
Avancon OTUs, the Omni-directional Transfer Units, provides smooth and fast transfer where the box has to be diverted or transferred to another conveyor line or around a corner.
Thanks to these most modern materials handling systems the entire line speed - including the existing area - has been increased by 17 %, including the Picking Performance. The modular ZPC-System can be easily extended. So three more zone conveyors were installed.
A convincing aspect was the safety of the Avancon system, in case of human contact with the conveyors. A finger protection for each driven conveyor-roller doesnÕt exist anymore. Everything is protected inside the conveyor frame Ð including the drive system and the control system. Nothing sticks out - not even a screw-head. Now the operators are freely working around the Avancon conveyors. The whole conveyor lines are smooth and streamlined with their Aluminum anodized profiles, which feel like silk.
It also provides more vertical space because there is no more cable ducts underneath. This is a great advantage for those who have to follow the global GMP regulation, because now they can actually clean the space underneath the conveyor very easily. Because the Avancon ZPC-Conveyor Concept works fully autonomous, cable ducts and a central control cabinet are no longer necessary. This makes the whole investment really economical.
Another great thing is the fast installation. The given time was quite limited because Hanmi could not stop the daily operation. Avancon was able to manage everything within the required time thanks to its Òplug-inÓ concept. All modules were pre-assembled, pre-programmed and tested in the Swiss factory before shipping. And with this Òplug-in" concept, the installation is automatically established simultaneously with the electrical connection, which includes also the data exchange.
It was the first time, a new experience for everyone who was involved in this project. They had no experience with Avancon products before. Despite this, even the first days of operations went very well, without any issue.
The system has been running for almost 1-year.
Everything is in good condition and Hanmi is considering replacing
all their conveyor systems with the Avancon concept.

- Canada Immigration – Changes to Parent Visa System
- Earlier this year, the government of Canada has announced its intention to replace the current, highly contentious system of lottery-based allotment of parents and grand parents and visa and move towards a quota-based system.
The applications for the new system are expected to open at the end of this month. A social media post period is set to reopen at the end of the month. According to a spokesperson for the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), a social media post conveying the same was issued around the end of the previous year.
The minister for Canada immigration, Mr Ahmed Hussen clarified that an overwhelming frustration among both the immigrants and Canadian citizens over the existing systems was the primary reason for switching to the new one. He however assured the applicants that the change would not blindside anyone and adequate warning would be given to all before the applications are reopened
In the previous allotment for the year 2017 which was through a lottery nearly as many as 95,000 applications were made by permanent residents for bringing in their aged relatives to the country through the Canada immigration process out of which only 10,000 applications were accepted which led to fierce competition. Many people complained of the unfair pressure on the applicants
Mr Rahman opined that politicians need to work out the details of the quota system and see how it will affect the families coming to Canada in the future. In the short term, however he suggested that the IRCC admit its lack of enough manpower to process the application in time.
There has been a huge backlog of applications which have swamped the family reunification system for many years, however with these changes the backlog may be reduced considerably.
The positive changes that are being made not just for this visa program, but the Canada immigration system is typical of the current political climate of the country and is a testimonial to the Canadian government’s commitment to immigration

In an effort to reduce violence and promote counter terrorism awareness it is vital that agencies violating the laws of the United States government understand that violence , harassment and unethical activities that defy a persons oath of office to our nation can do nothing but only link our very government to activities that can later humilaite our nation. For those that hate our laws and conduct covert activities that have been proven clinically and scientifically to led to mass shootings it is my hope that you open your eyes and learn from past studies from the CIA and other organizations. - Territorial dispute settlement to open up new perspectives for Japan and Russia
- Peace treaty between Moscow and Tokyo would bring the countries to the new level of cooperation, Japanese Ambassador to Russia Toyohisa Kozuki told RIA Novosti.
“We are convinced that signing a peace treaty after solving the territorial problem would bring Japanese-Russian relations to a new, higher level. The Japanese government will continue efforts to get to that end goal,” the diplomat said.
According to him, Moscow and Tokyo have agreed to hold the visit of Prime Minister Abe to Russia in early 2019 with an opportunity to hold a meeting between foreign ministers before that as well as the Japanese-Russian top level meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit that will be held in Osaka in June.
Analyzing the potential outcomes of further negotiations on the disputed territories, James Brown, Associate Professor of Political Science, Temple University, Japan Campus, said that negotiations over the disputed islands appear to have entered a new phase.
“This is the result of Japan, under Prime Minister Abe, adopting a more conciliatory stance towards the territorial dispute. Specifically, Abe has agreed to conduct negotiations based on the 1956 Joint Declaration. This is important because the 1956 Joint Declaration only mentions the two smaller of the four disputed islands. This suggests that, unlike his predecessors, Abe is willing to accept […] such a deal. This willingness to accept compromise has helped to promote a more positive atmosphere in bilateral relations,” the expert told PenzaNews.
However, in his opinion, peace treaty seems doubtful in the nearest future.
“Although Abe has given considerable ground, the prospects for a final deal still appear doubtful. This is because the Russian side has made it clear that Japan would need to fulfill certain strict conditions to even achieve a two island deal,” James Brown explained.
“These conditions have not officially been made public, but they are expected to include a requirement that Japan accept Russia's right to the islands as a consequence of WWII. Furthermore, Russia looks set to demand that the two transferred islands be excluded from the US-Japan Security Treaty, thereby preventing US troops from being stationed on the transferred islands,” the analyst added.
Both the Japanese public and Japan's US ally are unlikely to approve of these conditions, he said.
“I do not expect the status quo to change. This is because the current arrangement suits Russia well. It is in control of all four of the disputed islands. Furthermore, the existence of the territorial dispute gives the Japanese leadership an incentive to engage with Russia politically and economically. This incentive would disappear if the dispute were actually to be settled,” James Brown noted.
In turn, Grant Newsham, Senior Research Fellow at the Japan Forum for Strategic Studies in Tokyo, with experience as a US Diplomat and US Marine Officer, suggested that the question of the prospects for resolving this territorial dispute will remain relevant even in 20 years.
“It seems like the negotiations have entered a new phase a number of times over the years – but that always leads to another ‘new phase.’ I don’t see an agreement being reached that resolves the issues,” he said adding that peace treaty could have a favorable effect on the development of Russian Far East.
“I’ve been watching this issue since the Yeltsin era, and just don’t see the ‘disputed islands’ issue being resolved. There will always be tension in the Russia – Japan relationship given their history of territorial jostling and outright war over the last few centuries,” the analyst explained.
In his opinion, the problem is unlikely to be resolved by the islands returning to Japan.
“The Japanese and Russians will continue meeting and maybe sometime within the next decade they will reach a deal that gives Japan the privilege of paying Russia a lot of money in exchange for some Japanese companies setting up some limited operations in the disputed islands nearest to Japan. It’s hard to imagine actual territory being returned,” Grant Newsham said.
According to Jonathan Berkshire Miller, Senior Fellow at the Asian Forum Japan, the decision to return back to the 1956 Soviet-Japan Joint Declaration as a framework for a peace treaty, makes Russia closer to potentially parting with two of the four disputed isles: Shikotan and Habomai.
“Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin have definitely worked hard to move beyond historical tensions between Tokyo and Moscow. The two leaders have met over 20 times and Abe has been focused on finding a resolution to the territorial dispute before his third and final term concludes in 2021,” the analyst reminded.
“The reality however remains complicated as there are surely strings attached to any potential land reversion – most importantly caveats placed on the role and potential role of Japan’s ally – the US,” Jonathan Berkshire Miller added.
This puts Tokyo in a difficult position to accept a partial deal with large risks and consequences to its relations with Washington, he said.
“Japan should also be concerned that any deal on the Northern Territories that involves alliance concessions could set a destabilizing precedent for future US support over the Senkaku islands in the East China Sea, which are claimed by China but administered by Japan. As of now, the US has articulated its support for the Senkaku under Article 5 of the US-Japan Security Treaty, as territory controlled by Japan,” the expert explained.
Meanwhile, Lak Chansok, Researcher at Cambodia Maritime Silk Road Research Center (CMSRRC), the Royal University of Phnom Penh in Cambodia and at Democracy Promotion Center, Research Center for Asia Pacific Studies (RCAPS), Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan, reminded that during the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok in September, Russian President Vladimir Putin raised an idea of renegotiating the long-waited peace treaty with Japan without any “precondition” by the end of this year. However, according to the analyst, despite positive political rhetoric of the two leaders, it remains too early to say that any deal on such significant issue will be successfully reached by the end of 2018 for several important reasons.
“First, both countries have different positions to deal with such issue,” he stressed.
According to him, geopolitically speaking, the Kuril Islands serve as a strategic buffer zone and remain significant for Russia’s defense capacity in the Pacific.
“Russia, in addition, is believed to enhance its strategic and political presence in the Asia-Pacific as Japan has recently developed its defense abilities including deployment of US-made F-35B fighter jets and especially aircraft carriers for the first time since WWII. Trump’s regional policy uncertainty and the growing US leverage to pressure Japan to strengthen its military capacities make Russia unlikely to make any potential deals for Japan at this critical juncture,” Lak Chansok said.
Kazuhiko Togo, Former Head of the Department of Europe and Asia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Professor of International Politics and Director of the Institute of World Affairs, Kyoto Sangyo University, stressed that the negotiations between the countries entered an important new phase, and the two leaderships are determined to move ahead to a new relationship based on trust and peace.
“The two countries respectively need to have yet unexplored trustworthy partner: for Japan it is Russia, and I believe, for Russia it is Japan. Something much more important than sheer number of islands is at stake. […] But naturally there are many obstacles to succeed in negotiations, such as understandable negative feelings in Russia to change any status–quo on territory, and strong patriotic feeling in Japan of resisting any outcome which does not realize in full their declared objective. There is an absolute need to understand the pain of the other side, and find out a mutually acceptable compromise-solution. I do not know whether the negotiators have reached that point of ‘mutually acceptable solution.’ If they have not reached that point yet, I sincerely hope they would find it in a not too distant future,” the analyst said.
At the same time, according to him, it is very difficult to predict the development of the situation.
“In Japan, it is very clear that Prime Minister Abe is determined to realize a qualitatively new relationship. I cannot imagine a stronger candidate in the foreseeable future so firmly determined in this course. In this sense Russia has now a great window of opportunity. If we fail to grasp this window of opportunity, for the foreseeable future, it would be closed for both countries. I do hope that a full agreement would be made within the Abe-Putin period,” the former Japanese diplomat concluded.
For many years, Russia and Japan have been negotiating a peace treaty, which, after the end of World War II, was never signed.
Tokyo claims the Kuril Islands Kunashir, Shikotan, Iturup and Habomai, referring to the bilateral Russo-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Amity of 1855.
In 1956, the USSR and Japan signed a joint declaration, according to which Moscow agreed to consider the possibility of transferring Habomai and Shikotan after the conclusion of a peace treaty. The fate of Kunashir and Iturup was not discussed. The USSR hoped that the declaration would put an end to the dispute, but Japan considered the document to be only part of the solution to the problem, without giving up claims on all the islands. Subsequent negotiations led nowhere.
Moscow’s position is that following the Second World War, the Southern Kuriles became part of the USSR; then Russia became its successor, and Russian sovereignty over the islands, which has the appropriate international legal framework, is beyond doubt.

- Washington’s withdrawal from INF Treaty without alternative project to undermine world stability
- The international community continues to actively monitor the situation around the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty after the US stated their intent to withdraw from the agreement if Russia “will not return to compliance with its terms and conditions” within 60 days.
According to Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova, the US Embassy in Moscow delivered an official note to the Foreign Ministry on December, 4, but it reproduced “groundless accusations of alleged violations by Russia without any evidence to back these claims.”
“Let me emphasise that Russia has never received any materials, data or facts from anyone proving that Moscow was in breach of this treaty or failed to comply in good faith with its provisions. We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to the INF Treaty as one of the cornerstones of strategic stability and international security,” she said at the briefing on December, 5.
Analyzing difficult situation, Thomas Graham, Lecturer in Russian and European Studies at European Studies Council, MacMillan Center, Yale University, said that Russia and the United States, despite mutual accusations of violating the INF Treaty, have the opportunity to ensure the opposite.
“Experts agree that there are technical solutions that would enable each country to determine that the other side is now in compliance with the treaty. The issue is whether there is sufficient political will and desire in Moscow and Washington to save the treaty. Or whether each for its own reasons would rather be free of the limitations imposed by the INF Treaty,” Thomas Graham told PenzaNews.
From his point of view, today the question of strategic stability is no longer one that can be decided solely between the United States and Russia, as was the case during the Cold War.
“The strategic landscape has changed radically since the INF Treaty was signed in 1987. While the United States and Russia remain by a wide margin the preeminent nuclear powers, the nuclear equation is becoming increasingly multipolar as other countries, particularly China, expand their nuclear arsenals. In addition, several countries, including China, India, Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan, have intermediate-range ballistic missiles in their arsenals, which are not subject to the limitations of the INF Treaty,” the analyst explained.
According to him, in these circumstances the treaty needs to be multilateral.
“Achieving that would require arduous negotiation, and there is no guarantee of success. Nevertheless, even if the INF Treaty no longer makes sense, there is a reason to try to save it for the moment. Saving it would restore a modicum of trust between the United States and Russia, trust that would help the two countries to develop a way to move beyond the INF Treaty toward a new structure of arms control appropriate for today’s world,” Thomas Graham said.
In his opinion, Russia and the US are the best countries to develop such a concept adequate to the challenges of today.
“Instead of casting blame at one another for undermining strategic stability, the two countries would be better served by starting discussions aimed at jointly developing a new concept of strategic stability and then persuading other countries to adopt it. That would provide the basis for a new structure of arms control appropriate for the world we now live in. The question is how to start such discussions given the deepening antagonism between the two countries. To that question, there is no easy answer. I wish that the United States and Russia would show enough statesmanship to put an end to the deterioration in bilateral relations,” the analyst added.
In turn, Patrick Sensburg, German MP from the CDU/CSU fraction, reminded that for years the US has voiced concerns about Russia’s alleged non-compliance with the INF Treaty.
“For this reason I would like Russia to rebut our concerns with the aim of leading the discussion to be more transparent. In fact, we need to build better trust between our governments,” the politician said.
At the same time, in his opinion, the existing contract should not be terminated without an alternative project prepared in advance.
“Important treaties with the aim of disarming such as the INF should not be prematurely terminated unilaterally without any alternative – even if we are in doubt whether one side sticks to the contract or not. Together, we must work to ensure more international trust and security and we should get further then the already agreed rules and not beyond,” Patrick Sensburg said.
According to him, the world community should do everything possible to keep the agreement in action.
“We should do everything we can to maintain within the contract. The INF treaty is seen as an anchor for peace in Europe and the world. Nevertheless, the treaty needs a modernization, for example, not only involving Russia and the United States, but also countries like China,” the German MP said.
Meanwhile, Steven Pifer from Center for International Security and Cooperation, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University, and former United States Ambassador to Ukraine (1998-2000), ex-Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, suggested that in the near future the INF Treaty will lose its power.
“Unfortunately, I fear that we are seeing the end of the INF Treaty, which will have a negative impact on European and global security,” the expert stressed.
In his opinion, the major problem is that Russia “has deployed the 9M729 ground-launched cruise missile” [SSC-8 according to Western classification; the US consider it to be a medium-range missile, prohibited by the INF Treaty; Russia is sure that the rocket is not subject to the agreement, since it was not developed or tested for such a range].
“The White House does not seem interested in preserving in treaty, and some in Pentagon would like to develop a US ground-launched intermediate-range missile. In these circumstances, no one seems to be pressing a strategy to maintain the treaty and its limits,” Steven Pifer explained.
However, breaking the agreement will bring negative consequences for both countries, he said.
“With the treaty’s demise, Russia will be free to deploy its ground-launched intermediate-range missiles. At some point, the United States and NATO will decide on military countermeasures to ensure that Russia does not gain any meaningful advantage from its deployments. The end result is likely to be less stability, less security and greater military expenses for both sides,” former US ambassador said and added that it’s important to remember why the INF Treaty was concluded in the first place.
Pal Steigan, Norwegian politician, publisher, writer, independent entrepreneur in the field of culture and information technology, shared the view that the contract would be terminated.
“With the one-sided attack on the INF Treaty by the Trump-administration I think it is beyond salvation. A treaty between two parties cannot be saved by only one of them,” the politician stressed.
In his opinion, the US has given Russia the clear signal that it will not abide by the treaty.
“Russia will have to take that into account. I cannot see any reason or even wisdom in it for them to uphold the politics of the treaty. So then you have a new arms race. But in fact there is a new arms race already. The US are positioning new theatre nuclear weapons and has launched The Nuclear Posture Review [document published by the US Department of Defense] which spells it out load that the US opens for field use of tactical nuclear weapons. And China and Russia have answered in kind presenting their new weapons,” Pal Steigan said.
According to him, the main obstacle to mutual understanding between the two countries are the American elites.
“The outline of an understanding between Trump and Putin in Helsinki would have been a good place to start. But Trump is not allowed to walk along that path by his own deep state. The Helsinki meeting opened up for disarmament and new treaties, but the deep state and the military industrial complex cannot accept that,” the politician said.
“We have been balancing on the brink of nuclear war since September 2013. It is a very dangerous situation and nuclear war could be triggered by a series of international events. And the Western politicians are sleepwalking into it,” Pal Steigan added.
In turn, Matthew Bunn, a nuclear-security expert and a professor at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, suggested that it is possible, but difficult to rescue the treaty.
“Russia could, for example, say: “We don't think our 9M729 missile is a problem, but as a gesture of good will, we will dismantle the limited number of these missiles that exist, if you will add something to the Mk. 41 launcher that makes it clear it cannot fire cruise missiles,” the analyst suggested one of the scenarios.
In his opinion, the INF Treaty is still a very important document.
“Although many things have changed, saving the INF Treaty would serve both US and Russian security better than abandoning it. If the United States withdraws, then US allies in Europe and Asia face unlimited threats from Russian INF-range missiles, […] and Russia might face a short-time-of-flight threat to its nuclear command and control systems, as the US Pershing II missiles posed before they were dismantled, making any nuclear crisis more dangerous,” Matthew Bunn said.
In his opinion, the United States and Russia have to get back to talking to each other seriously about each of their concerns, and trying to find ways to build confidence and reduce the threats that each side sees as most dangerous.
“Russian President Putin and US President Trump should agree again that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought, and direct their experts to work seriously to reduce the nuclear dangers the two sides’ arsenals pose,” the analyst said.
“The United States and Russia should also get military-to-military contacts and nuclear scientist-to-nuclear-scientist cooperation going again. It is a danger to both our countries and to the world that the world’s largest nuclear complexes are proceeding in total isolation from each other,” the expert concluded.
