- Over the last 40 years, I have seen the San Lorenzo Valley Water District (District) take on many difficult challenges, including drought, landslides, flooding, earthquakes, and fire.
Boulder Creek, CA, February 05, 2021 - Over the last 40 years, I have seen the San Lorenzo Valley Water District (District) take on many difficult challenges, including drought, landslides, flooding, earthquakes, and fire. However, none of the previous years proved to be as difficult and challenging as 2020. Before August, the District was focused on its response to COVID-19 to ensure its staff and community’s safety. That included implementing new office and field protocols to improve sanitation, meeting all State and County orders, and separating workforces to ensure adequate staffing. The District also met the challenge of two PG&E public safety power outages while dealing with changes in staffing and meeting new protocols. Then in August the CZU Lighting Complex Fire moved through the San Lorenzo Valley. The District saw more than 1,600 acres of its watershed properties burned, lost miles of raw water pipeline, and suffered damage to our water storage and surface water infrastructure. It was not only the District who grieved losses but the surrounding San Lorenzo Valley community as well, with many losing homes to the fire. Although these were difficult circumstances, I am beyond proud of our community’s, Board of Directors’ and staff’s response. The resiliency of the San Lorenzo Valley and surrounding areas to work together to rebuild and restore continues to impress me.
I am looking forward to welcoming the new year and with it the productive track the District remains set on. In 2021 the District plans to continue to improve its infrastructure, restore post-fire damage, harden its facilities from future disasters, deliver high-quality water, provide outstanding customer service, and work with the community to create a stronger San Lorenzo Valley.
There is no doubt 2021 will be a challenging year, as the District will have to work through new challenges while moving forward a multitude of previously established projects. The impacts from the CZU fire will be felt for many years to come and our community is still preparing for the potential of debris flows. The District completed a project on its watershed property to harden the stream channel in case of a debris-flow disaster, is working closely with the County of Santa Cruz in preparation for evacuations, and has allowed State and other agencies such as the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to complete debris-flow monitoring studies on our watershed land.
Beyond the impacts of the fire, customers and the District are still dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The District and its customers are in a reciprocal partnership – the District is a public utility and depends on its customers, while its customers depend on the District to receive high-quality water service. Many residents in our community are struggling with economic distress and unable to regularly pay their water bills. The District understands these circumstances and wants to extend help to anyone in need. ARtistica is an iOS and Android app that uses XR, Artificial Intelligence, and advanced geo-positioning to experience our cities' space in new ways.
We bring into the world a fantastic new layer made with the creation of talented Digital Artists, using cutting edge technologies to provide a real taste of AR.
ARtistica is an active project with a solid roadmap. There is a lot of ideas that we want to develop during the year. Besides enlarging our Artists and Content Creators' community, we have a few exciting new functionalities that we are working on. Some of them include:
• a DeepFake exhibition from the French artist Q l'Atone;
• AR Artistic Paths and Treasure Hunts;
• Face Recognition;
• an end-to-end encrypted chat system to communicate and share within the application
• an advance photogrammetry scanner to create detailed scans of the world.
We have already a busy release schedule between Valentine Day and the Summer. However, we keep the calendar flexible. Many functionalities (like the AR Treasure Hunt) are kept parked until it is safe for people to be out again.
And of course, we are already working to make the app compatible with the new AR Smart Glasses that Facebook and Apple will release this year.
Our vision is to create a fun app for users to enjoy and have memorable experiences and, for Creatives and Artists, to have a platform to showcase their work and engage the public in new interactive ways.
We are open to considering a wide range of works, from video productions, 2D images, 3D animations, static holograms, and even small augmented reality games. We also hope to expand our collaborations to Museums and other organisations from the Culture and Entertainment sectors."

- Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History has named Liese Murphree as its new Director of Programs, Exhibits, and Collections.
Pacific Grove, CA, January 15, 2021 — Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History has named Liese Murphree as its new Director of Programs, Exhibits, and Collections.
The former director of STEM Sparks, a nonprofit focused on inquiry science and engineering outreach and online learning for K-8 students, has more than 20 years experience in the classroom and in museum education.
Murphree earned a Ph.D. in Soil Science (Chemistry) from the University of California, Davis, and earned dual majors (Chemistry and Environmental Studies) from Oberlin College, Ohio.
The Monterey resident taught high school and college chemistry and was a science and STEM educator at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum in Ashland, Oregon.
“I look forward to working with the talented staff at PGNHM to bring new ideas, new programs, and new audiences to the museum,” Murphree said.
Murphree’s arrival comes at a critical time for the popular downtown museum, which has remained closed to the public since March 2020 due to the pandemic.
“Liese Murphree brings not only the education, science and management background we were seeking, but also abiding passion for our mission and service to the community, said PGMNH president Tama Olver. “With Liese’s leadership our programs and exhibits will continue to inspire ‘discovery, wonder and stewardship of the natural world' through the challenges of the pandemic and beyond.”
In March of 2020, PGMNH pivoted to virtual programming, including its innovative Museum to You series that proved to be a resourceful digital solution to help entertain and enlighten the community during the pandemic.
Education has always been the cornerstone of the museum’s mission. Before the pandemic, the museum’s free field trips were always a trusted resource for teachers who wanted their students to access additional hands-on science learning. The museum has continued to support teachers and students, providing virtual field trip opportunities for students of all ages
In addition, the museum’s STREAM Project (Scientific Training, Research, Education and Monitoring) has helped inspire the next generations of scientists and conservationists. Through hands-on museum visits, outdoor learnings, and community science projects, the museum's education programming has used local species and stories to empower students through scientific skills and knowledge.

A retired NYPD police sergeant is calling for the arrest of a New Jersey judge, the resignation of the Chief Justice, and the firing of three law enforcement officers in the Garden State.
John F. Marchisotto said the court and law enforcement system in Jersey railroaded him, denied him justice, and even began systemic harassment in hopes of making the former policeman drop his claims.
"I worked in law enforcement. I went to court to testify as a witness. I know what detectives are supposed to do. I know what judges are supposed to do," Mr. Marchisotto said. "What happened, and continues to happen to me, is not how our judicial system is supposed to work."
Mr. Marchisotto has filed papers in Third Circuit US Court of Appeals, Case No. 20-1870, and the Superior Court of New Jersey seeking relief from the injustice inflicted on him. He also asks for formal punishment for those he accuses of harassing himself and his family. The State Chief Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Hillary Bryce should be fired.
He has also asked the US Department of Justice to launch a criminal investigation into the actions of Chief Justice Stuart Rabner and all those who work with and for the Chief Justice on the bench.
In addition, he immediately wants:
The immediate arrest of Defendant Judge Alberto Rivas with Middlesex County Courts.
The resignation of the Chief Justice Stuart J. Rabner.
The firing of State Police Detective Mudduser Malik, badge # 7408, Lieutenant Ronald Micucci, badge #5382, and MCO Detective Kelly with the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office.
The firing of The State Chief Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Hillary Bryce.
"These people have gone out of their way to harangue and harass me. I've done nothing to them, other than asking for justice. They have denied my simple and plain requests every step of the way," Mr. Marchisotto said.
He has a video of one instance. One of the judges in the filings accused the retired officer of threatening the judge in chambers with a gun.
"In the first place, getting a gun into a courthouse is very difficult, unless you are an officer of the court. As a retired police officer, I have more sense than to take a gun into a courthouse. I'd certainly never threaten anyone!" he said. "The judge filed a complaint and 100's of police officers swarmed my home, terrifying my wife and minor children."
