Quallaby, a leading global provider of telecommunications software for next generation networks, today announced that in concert with Zaffire™ Inc, a leading provider of optical networking systems for metropolitan and regional area networks
will demonstrate a joint solution that represents the telecommunications industry's first implementation of advanced Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for optical networks at SuperNet in Santa Clara, California, January 15 and 16.

This collaborative solution, which leverages digital wrapper technology and taps into the unique software capabilities embedded in the Zaffire ZOS(TM) operating system, will enable carriers to offer advanced optical SLAs. The advent of optical SLAs is significant because it will provide service providers the necessary tools to achieve profitability in the competitive telecommunications marketplace. With carriers needing to differentiate their optical service offerings amidst an increasingly competitive marketplace, SLAs will enable them to uniquely position their services and offset price competition.

"Zaffire has demonstrated a very promising optical service level agreement solution," said Leif Hoglund, RHK's director Telecom OS. "Being the first to market digital wrapper, the company has a definitive lead on its competitors. Zaffire and its partner Quallaby are solving some of the performance monitoring problems around services like gigabit ethernet, which require optical transport to the customer. Using digital wrapper technology, they have integrated performance monitoring with SLA reporting capabilities, which fills a large need in optical metro product offerings of this type, and makes it much easier for service providers to offer measurable SLA agreements."

Zaffire's ZOS operating system, in conjunction with its breakthrough digital wrapper technology, intelligently monitors and manages multiple wavelengths in the optical transport network with single-wavelength granularity. Digital wrapper technology and the ZOS operating system, which together provide the robust, carrier-class features necessary for management and intelligence in the optical domain, forms the core technology that will work in concert with Quallaby's expertise in SLA requirements for multi-vendor, end-to-end network monitoring, enabling a complete optical SLA offering.

"Zaffire has made a quantum leap forward in creating optical SLAs through our collaboration with Quallaby," stated Jim Fultz, CEO of Zaffire. "We have successfully demonstrated this solution to premiere carriers already. Zaffire has proven its strengths in network management with the Z-Manager solution. The next level in optical networking is clearly service management. With digital wrapper, carriers can monitor optical signals to reliably transport services such as GbE, ESCON and fiber channel information crucial to creating optical SLAs."

Offering SLA capabilities at the dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) wavelength level removes the need for expensive SONET-based protocols and equipment, allowing IP directly over DWDM, instead of IP over SONET over DWDM. Service-level management has become increasingly widespread within the higher layers of data networks as a means of guaranteeing minimum levels of service for carrier customers. For instance, SLAs are commonly used to verify that the correct levels of service are being provided to ATM or Frame Relay customers.

"Next-generation service providers need new tools for new transport technologies such as DWDM," said Gregory N. Ferguson, president and chief executive officer of Quallaby. "The old means of cobbling together SLAs are expensive and unreliable. By aggregating and analysing information from Zaffire's digital wrapper, PROVISO gives service providers sustainable competitive advantage by cost-effectively managing QoS-based services in a hyper-competitive market."

The joint Zaffire Quallaby demonstration involves use of digital wrapper to pass on important information to support SLAs through PROVISO from Quallaby software. A browser-based interface enables both the optical service provider, and its customer, to measure the service levels of optical signals.
