Pressbox (Press Release) -
Logica, Obvious Solutions (Global) Ltd and HP today announce U-go, a ground-breaking intelligent transport solution. This breakthrough will take the headache out of finding a taxi when travelling in an unfamiliar city or country, where language may be a barrier - using a mobile phone. It will be demonstrated at the 3GSM World Congress, Cannes, Feb 20th - 23rd 2001.
The new U-go solution, developed by Logica and built on LH 6000 Netservers from Hewlett-Packard Company, provides a fast, simple, safe and reliable method of ordering a taxi wherever you are in the world, whatever the time of day or night.
In Cannes, journalists, VIPs and delegates to the 3GSM World Congress will be able to experience for themselves this 2.0G/2.5G/3G development which will operate aboard a fleet of specially converted Logica/Obvious/HP branded vehicles.
U-go allows a user to order, pay for, and manage taxi journeys via an SMS-enabled mobile phone of any kind, from the simplest device to the latest WAP or GPRS handset. This eliminates the need to establish the telephone number of a local taxi company, wait in a queue, struggle with language and currency, worry about whether the driver is reputable, the route is the most direct, or the passenger is being overcharged.
This revolutionary new service offers operators the ability to earn revenue today on an advanced messaging-based application. Logica’s Wireless Internet group has worked with Obvious to develop U-go. Obvious is a member of the “m-Powered by Logica” co-operative marketing programme. The U-go solution leverages Logica’s world leading position in the mobile messaging arena and systems integration expertise to build the overall solution.
Larry Quinn, Chairman of Logica Mobile Networks explained, “As the 3G world approaches, operators are seeking imaginative and life-enhancing ways of exploiting the capacity of their bearer networks to differentiate their offerings, and maximise their return on investment. This innovative solution allows operators to do just that across 2.5G and eventually 3G networks.”
“Obvious recognises the need for wireless services that truly benefit the user’s mobile lifestyle. We also understand the need to create revenue today with the greatest possible market penetration. The Obvious solution holds out the real prospect of revenue streams for operators today. They don’t have to wait for emerging technologies to make our product operational or profitable, but as those technologies emerge, so the service can become more innovative,” said Lionel and Eli Cohen, founders of Obvious Solutions.
“HP is delighted to support this service, as it is an excellent example of a real mobile e-service,” said Paul Birtch, Director of Marketing, HP Network & Service Providers business unit. “Working with HP’s Mobile E-Services Bazaar partners Logica and Obvious, we are able to deliver unique and value-added solutions to best enhance ones lifestyle anytime, anywhere.”
Udayan Guha of PwC’s Financial Advisory Services, works closely with Obvious Solutions and is providing strategic and financial advice. He believes “that this is a high potential business proposition driven by a credible management team.”
U-go will be demonstrated on the Logica stand (E16) and the HP stand (F5) at the 3GSM World Congress, and aboard the fleet of vehicles mentioned above, for selective trials.

Notes to Editor
How the service works
A simple order (a request for taxi) is sent from the handset and automatically routed to a pool of reputable taxi companies nation-wide, and the closest taxi is despatched.
Upon vehicle arrival, an SMS alert is sent to the user’s phone stating the driver’s name, mobile number, vehicle location, car registration and car colour.
Users can request a priority pick-up, the type of vehicle and, in a familiar town, their preferred taxi companies.
In an unfamiliar town, users can order a taxi day or night from a pool of pre-screened companies. There is no need to know the telephone number of a local taxi company, wait in a queue, speak the language, carry foreign currency or know the current location. U-go carries the intelligence to deal with all those questions.
Pre-journey e-quotes, full driver details, and an SMS text message when the driver has arrived at the arranged pickup point ensure security, punctuality and reliability. The journey will be billed electronically, e-payment can be made and e-receipts are issued.
Following its launch in Cannes, U-go will be available throughout the UK, 24 hours a day, seven days a week over Web, WAP, SMS, IDTV and Voice. The solution will then be available in Europe, Asia and America in late 2001.
