Quallaby delivers service-ready VPN monitoring solution with release of PROVISO 2.2

11th January 2001
Quallaby # 0012

Quallaby Corporation, a leading provider of telecommunications software for next generation networks, today announced the general availability of PROVISOŽ 2.2, the network monitoring and service assurance software specifically architected for network service providers (NSPs). PROVISO 2.2 includes capabilities for VPN performance monitoring and the PROVISO VPN Application Pack containing service-ready report templates for on-demand network reporting of VPN networks.

Service providers offering managed IP-based Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) provide customers with a cost-effective outsourced way to increase secure connections while eliminating costly traditional dedicated circuits. The number of IP-VPNs is projected to grow substantially with Infonetics Research estimating that worldwide VPN revenue will reach US$32 billion by 2004. Enabling this growth is the capacity to monitor the performance levels of VPN services contracted to, in service level agreements (SLAs).

PROVISO 2.2 has incorporated capabilities to monitor the establishment and authentication of secure IP-VPNs including support for SNMP V3 protocol for added security, support for virtual routers, service providers’ next generation option for network management, support for Cisco IP Security (IP Sec) protocol that provides encryption and authentication services for IP packets, and improved scalability in data collection and retention.

In addition, PROVISO 2.2 can monitor VPN performance on a device or customer basis, leveraging PROVISO’s flexible business-oriented grouping that displays via assigned properties (for example, technology, vendor, customer, geography, service level) the relationships among network resources and customer information and services deployed.

The VPN Application Pack provides ready to use network report templates for the metrics critical to establishing VPNs and monitoring new services. The templates include IKE (Internet Key Encryption) volume and throughput tunnel management, packet drops, security failures, and encryption statistics, now available as on-demand reports. They can also be automatically provisioned for viewing by both network operations and their customers.

“PROVISO 2.2 can support the virtual router features in the Unisphere Networks ERX routing switch so that service providers can monitor the performance of their VPNs and secure services to meet committed service levels,” said Jerome Moisand, senior product manager of Unisphere Networks. “The focus on the VPN applications with typical Quallaby scalability in combination with the ERX aggregation and service capabilities offers service providers the most sophisticated solution for carrier-class VPN management.”

As in every PROVISO release, there is a scalability improvement in PROVISO 2.2. The SNMP collectors in PROVISO DataLoad have been optimised to yield a significant increase in SNMP performance, so that PROVISO DataLoad can collect as many as four million metrics per hour, in addition to flat file import. Plus, there is added scalability in data aggregation and retention enabling data to be kept for up to two years in the data mart.

“With the release of PROVISO 2.2, we are leveraging our scalable technology for both infrastructure and application support for VPN services,” said Tom Axbey, Quallaby vice president for worldwide sales and marketing. “Service providers using PROVISO can rapidly deploy new VPN services and quickly realise ROI with better service level agreements and improved customer satisfaction.”
