Taiwan(Feb. 8, 2001) – Equant (NYSE: ENT and Paris Bourse: EQU) announced today it is the first service provider to enable global roaming for Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) access. Corporate users can now access their closed user group WAP applications from outside their WAP service’s home network by making a local roamed mobile phone call over Equant’s network.
Equant’s WAP roaming service, called Global WAP Access, is initially available in 22 countries, including France, Japan and the United Kingdom. Global WAP Access will be available in the U.S. by the end of the year. Until Equant launched this service, few users were able to access WAP service outside their home network and none were able to cost-effectively access it. The users who were able to access out-of-network WAP services had to first make a costly international, or even intercontinental, mobile call to their home network. With Global WAP Access, users can gain direct access to their WAP services by making a local roamed call that results in significant cost savings, which can be 40 percent or more for intercontinental travelers.
“The introduction of Global WAP Access exemplifies our commitment to providing our customers new technologies that cost-effectively enhance their communications strategy,” said Jean-Yves Charlier, president, Equant Markets, Sales and Service.
Equant can deliver WAP roaming through the upgrade of Equant’s Remote Access services. With this upgrade, Equant’s network supports V.110 digital signaling used by data-capable Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) phones, eliminating the need for the mobile network to revert to a slow analogue modem interface when communicating with Equant’s network.
“One of the most common user complaints regarding standard WAP service is slow connection time,” said Richard Blaustein, vice president, Equant Lines of Business. “With Equant’s service, connection times are much faster than a standard analogue connection, improving from 45 to 75 seconds to a mere 10 to 20 seconds. Additionally, Equant’s service provides improved connection stability along with reduced transit delays as a result of the fully digital network path.”
Equant operates the world’s largest network, providing voice, data, Internet, integration, and application services to companies around the globe. The network reaches key business centers in more than 220 countries and territories. For additional information, visit www.equant.com.
