Pressbox (Press Release) - ADC Announces GPRS Network Performance Reporting Capabilities For Singularit.e

ADC’s Singularit.e Suite Now Allows Networks to Move Flexibly into Delivering Next Generation Service Management

CANNES – 20th February, 2001 – ADC (Nasdaq: ADCT; www.adc.com), a leading global supplier of fibre optics, network equipment, software and integration services for broadband multiservice networks, has announced the launch of Metrica/NPR (network performance reporting) for GPRS, a component of its Singularit.e Operational Support System (OSS) suite. ADC’s expertise as a market leader in GSM network performance reporting is now being used to help operators move into the next generation of services. Metrica solutions are the leading GSM service assurance tools, and the introduction of a GPRS capability demonstrates that Metrica is also setting the standard for the move into the next generation of networks.

ADC’s service assurance tools offer a smooth transition from 2G to 2.5G as the user interfaces for the new system are already familiar to network operators using Metrica/NPR. Leading GSM operators already using Metrica/NPR and moving to the new solution for GPRS include TDC Mobile International (formerly known as TeleDanmark Mobile), and other major European operators.

The GPRS extension to Metrica/NPR enables mobile operators to focus on managing their GPRS networks to deliver high quality service to their customers, rather than simply monitoring network performance. Metrica/NPR for GPRS can improve QoS by identifying and locating the potential in the network for such problems as congestion, dropped calls
and unsatisfactorily delivered data services, to which it alerts the network operation centre before customers are affected. Operators can use the GPRS traffic management and profiling information supplied by the solution to manage network capacity
proactively, configuring their networks to help ensure the maximum return on investment, and using the solution’s forecasting module to plan efficiently for increases in network capacity.

ADC’s Metrica/NPR for GPRS solution has been specially developed for the very different performance and technology characteristics of GPRS networks compared to circuit-switched voice networks. For example, while circuit-switched traffic on GSM networks is symmetric and constant during the duration of a call, traffic running on GPRS services is asymmetric, and information arrives in variable bursts requiring dynamic variations in bandwidths. As a result, GPRS network operations require new parameters for planning, optimisation and dimensioning. In response to this challenge, ADC has devised a new specific set of analytical tools and key performance indicators to assist the management of next generation networks.

The extension of Metrica/NPR into GPRS network reporting demonstrates the flexibility of Metrica solutions, which help operators to introduce new network technologies smoothly. Metrica/NPR’s architecture, which is comprised of a core performance management system upon which sit technology layers, means that operators can integrate performance measurements seamlessly from different sources and network technologies. Network technologies such as IP, ATM Frame Relay and SDH also can be incorporated with the GPRS solution, making it even more powerful.

“ADC has created a unique solution to help GPRS network operators improve their quality of service levels,” said David Heaps, senior vice president and general manager at ADC. “As GPRS networks will carry mission-critical data applications, the delivery of quality services to customers will be a crucial competitive issue. Our solution is designed to give network operators a vital edge in the market. The Metrica solution’s flexible architecture, which allows the introduction of a GPRS capability, can help operators adapt to the challenges presented by the next generation of networks and services.”
