Philips Semiconductors・ eco-principles turn packaging green

Philips Semiconductors, an affiliate of Royal Philips Electronics, has strengthened its position as a world leader in the application of eco-principles in manufacturing by developing new high performance .green・ plastic packaging that has less environmental impact and performs better at high temperatures.

The development of the .green・ plastic is an example of Philips Semiconductors・ commitment to creating .eco-designed・ products that offer customers leading-edge semiconductors which minimise environmental impact. The initiative is in line with the company・s policy to have 75% of the company・s products .eco-designed・ by 2002.

All Philips Semiconductors・ LQFP and TQFP packages (Low profile/Thin Quad Flat Package) are now being produced using green plastics. The company is also investigating the use of green compounds for different types of semiconductor packaging, including all other IC packages, eliminating brominated substances without increasing the flammability risk of the product.

The new plastics offer considerable improvements over conventional packaging by significantly increasing the product lifetimes at high temperatures. This is achieved by eliminating materials such as brominated flame-retardants and antimony, which are not only harmful to the environment, but also corrosive and shorten the life of products when exposed to high temperatures.

:As part of our Eco-vision program, we are designing products with the environment in mind and minimising environmental impact while improving product quality and lifetime. The .green・ plastic is an excellent example of this,; said Leo Klerks, environment, safety and health manager for Philips Semiconductors.

:We are committed to our environment program and environmental targets to reduce energy and water consumption, waste material and emission levels in the production of our semiconductors.;
