The Tug of War Association National Championships will see over forty clubs do battle for the coveted National Titles and with them the right to put on an England shirt in the European Championships later this year.
The foot and mouth crisis created a near total ban on tug of war during the early part of this year and club coaches have fought to ensure competitors are recovered from four months of lost competition and training. The pullers have been hard at work following strict diets and regimes of exercise, weight lifting and running in an attempt to meet the scales at the correct weight on the morning of the event. Some teams still have not been allowed back to their training facilities and they will not be at the championships.
Teams of eight, in set weight categories, pull Tug of War. In the championships men compete at, 560 kilo, 600 kilo, 640 kilo, 680 kilo, 720 kilo and Catchweight. The women compete at 520 kilo and 560 kilo and the youth at 400, 420, 530 and 560 kilos.
The event, Britains largest tug of war competition, kicks off at HMS Collingwood in front of a potential audience of seven thousand. Double excitement exists because the tug of war will run in conjunction with the famous field gun competition at HMS Collingwood.
The event offers good photo opportunities both sports action and social interest. Teams are willing to talk live on air, as is Roger Beardsmore. Contact him to arrange interviews or receive reports.
