A SPORTING CELEBRATION FOR THE WORLD

Like all good ideas, it’s so obvious … that no one thought of it before. Then former Olympic ski-jumping silver medallist & World Cup winner HUBERT NEUPER met with Austrian business colleagues to discuss plans to celebrate the millennium … and in a sudden moment of inspiration, the WORLD SPORTS AWARDS were born.

The inaugural event was staged in Vienna last year. Next year, the world looks to London as the UK plays host to this most prestigious occasion at the ROYAL ALBERT HALL, on TUESDAY 16th JANUARY 2001.

Every field of human endeavour honours its heroes with annual awards. Oscars, Baftas, Brits, Emmys, Oliviers: glittering, star-studded, internationally acclaimed occasions which honour excellence in entertainment.

But sports - which speak a universal language, understandable across every kind of national, cultural and social barrier - had never been marked by such a celebration, until HUBERT (supported by the WORLD SPORTS AWARDS FOUNDATION) established this event.

Sport, he points out is “stronger than any ruling party, with an honesty more enduring than history itself. No ideology can bind its spirit, no philosophy is this free, no education can teach you more. It has no regard for race, colour, boundary, status or background. Nothing shapes the character more than the ethics and the glory of sport”

The WORLD SPORTS AWARDS celebrates the success of the very highest achievers within the professional sporting arena: individuals who have stirred, inspired and thrilled the world with feats of strength, speed, skill, stamina and endurance. 71 of sport’s great and good, from 30 different countries have each put forward five nominees for awards in each of 15 categories. From their votes, a top five shortlist in each category has been compiled. Voting will soon take place on the shortlist, with one additional vote - canvassed from the public via the internet - added in each section.
…./
Categories include all the expected track, field, ball, water, winter and combat sports, supplemented by motor racing and extreme and adventure sports. This last category embraces all-action activities such as base jumping, speed snow biking and no-limit free diving.

The judging panel includes sporting luminaries such as Muhammed Ali, Sir Bobby Charlton, Wayne Gretzky, Steffi Graf, Niki Lauda and Mark Spitz.

Nominees from the UK include DAVID BECKHAM, LENNOX LEWIS, STEVEN REDGRAVE, ANGELA MUDGE (the world-beating mountain runner from Scotland) and JONATHAN EDWARDS.

ROGER MOORE hosts the glittering ceremony, which will be attended Prince Albert of Monaco and Buzz Aldrin (a man who can offer the event a unique world view).

This is where the Olympics meet the Oscars: where the celebrities of sport collect the awards which are their due.
