Hospitals and clinics to get benefits from Microsoft Office XP technology

iTAG – iSOFT’s new Office XP Smart Tag for health – saving time and money for the NHS

London – UK – May 31 2001. iSOFT, a Microsoft ISV partner and leading supplier of application systems for healthcare organisations, has developed ‘iTAG’ – its Smart Tag for health to benefit healthcare staff and patients and support clinical decision-making by providing a better-informed, better-resourced service.

iTAG instantly accesses key clinical information such as patient or drug details from existing data sources by utilising Smart Tag functionality that is built into Microsoft Office XP, to be launched on May 31.

Smart Tags, currently being developed by iSOFT for use in hospitals and healthcare organisations, will help reduce the time it takes to write correspondence. When accessing key clinical information, the Smart Tag retrieves appropriate demographic or medical information within seconds, removing the need for laborious searching of numerous patient information databases.

iSOFT’s Head of Clinical Applications R&D Dr Chris Tackaberry believes that one of the most exciting features of iSOFT’s Smart Tag technology is its potential for customisation.

Dr Tackaberry says: “iSOFT is working on developing a Smart Tag that recognises drugs as they are prescribed and offers a range of cheaper alternatives. This is cutting-edge technology. It is amazing to think that hospitals and patients will be able to benefit through quick and easy use of Office-based solutions. The use of generic brands for drugs through iTAG could save healthcare provider organisations a great deal of money - money that could be invested in patient care. Clearly, the medical practitioner will always have the final say on the medication prescribed to meet individual patient needs. However the potential Smart Tags offer in supporting clinical professionals is very exciting.”

While one of iSOFT’s key customers, City Hospital in Birmingham investigates the potential of the Smart Tag technology, iSOFT is working with Microsoft to develop Smart Tags in other areas, extending its use to the Internet to deliver customised IT solutions for its growing healthcare customer base.

David Roberts, Chief Executive of Birmingham City Hospital NHS Trust says, “The challenge of modernising the NHS in line with the government’s Information for Health strategy can only be met by effective use of modern IT systems. Introduction of new technologies increases our ability to introduce integrated care that enables us to make better use of our resources. We welcome the advances that iTAG heralds and look forward to developing the potential of such technology.”

Jenny Duff, Industry Marketing Manager, Public Sector at Microsoft Limited, added: “It is rewarding to see Office XP-based solutions that can add value to the vital area of healthcare. iSOFT has developed a ‘smart’ solution, applicable to many hospitals and clinics, which highlights that Office XP can be seen as the next generation portal for accessing business critical information in an easy to use way.”
