LEK Polska Implements Scala

Pressbox (Press Release) - Eastern European pharmaceutical leader selects Scala due to its solid experience in the pharmaceutical industry worldwide

16 April 2002: LEK Polska Sp. z o.o., has signed a contract to implement Scala’s standard ERP software package in Poland in order to maintain the company’s further expansion.

“The previous system, which contained a set of various, loosely integrated, book keeping and logistic modules, was unable to process large amounts of data and didn’t meet the new requirements we have because of our ever expanding activity,” says Bojan Jagodič, Financial Director at LEK Polska. “The quality and quantity of the information that the old system delivered was no longer sufficient to manage a company efficiently and we therefore decided to purchase new ERP software early last year. By way of elimination we selected Scala, relying on their references and experience in the pharmaceutical market”.

LEK Polska is a subsidiary of the Slovenian company, LEK Pharmaceutical and Chemical Company d.d., a medium-sized manufacturer of drugs, over-the-counter medications and veterinary products. LEK d.d. has been present in Poland for over 35 years, while LEK Polska was established in 1991 and has since managed to build a strong market position. In October 2001 LEK Polska acquired Argon S.A., a Polish drug manufacturer, thus extending its product offerings and confirming its market leadership.

LEK Polska has purchased Scala’s financial modules including fixed assets management, logistics and manufacturing. One of the main requirements was that any system had to provide concurrent user access as well as remote access to the whole system, hosted on a server at the Pruszków headquarters, from the production plant in Łódź. LEK Polska also selected Crystal Reports software as an additional tool for generating reports.

The project started in early October 2001. “The book keeping and logistics modules were implemented first and it proved to be a great challenge to complete the first part of the project within a three-month period, because of LEK’s particularly complicated company structure,” says Piotr Krzysztoporski, Scala’s consultant who supervised the first implementation stage. “Every step of the implementation was carried out according to our standard Signature implementation methodology and system parameters and work procedures were set up following consultation with LEK Polska representatives. Two crucial requirements that couldn’t be met in the standard software processes were defined during the analysis phase. The requirements came from Polish legislation for drug trading and together we worked out that they could be met through Scala’s Automation Manager. Once the initial testing was done the system went live and they successfully closed their first month of operation in February this year.”

Due to its large scope, the project was split into several stages. At the moment, Scala’s financial and logistics processes are being implemented at ARGON Łódź, a separate company co-operating with LEK Sp. z.o.o. The implementation of the manufacturing processes, planned for later this year, will be the next stage of the project.
Jagodič concludes: “This is not our first encounter with Scala’s products - two other companies related to LEK already use Scala software. Selecting the Scala system was not just a simple selection of an ERP system, but a decision to start a long-term relationship with Scala as a company.”
