1. Son Min in Tajikistan.

…on October 1 there were two explosions in the building of Korean Christian Mission “Son Min” (Actual Grace) in the capital of Tajikistan. 8 people were killed and 46 injured. Tajikistan’s law enforcement agencies soon found not only the people who conducted the terrorist act but also the ones who inspired it. All three terrorists are the citizens of Tajikistan. They studied at the Dushanbe Islam Institute and committed the crime out of “religious fanaticism.” As one of the terrorist group members said, the fact that some of their coreligionists attended the Christian church resented them (terrorists) very much. According to people, monitoring the situation in Tajikistan, it’s the first time that such terrorist acts are conducted on religious fanaticism grounds…
Islamic and “Christian denominations have dominated Central Asia for many years. But nowadays many young people find their religious teachers in many different, sometimes questionable and unknown religious sects…

2. National Sport “Ulok”

Do you know where POLO originates? THE ORIENT! Let me tell you about one more Oriental sport – Uzbek national sport “Ulok” that is in some way close to polo.

“…horse is a sacred animal.”
“… with the help of this game our ancestors trained their horses to act properly during the fights and battles. If the horse was ill bred, it gave its owner lots of trouble during the battle.”

“Ulok,” - a most ancient sport played by our ancestors back to the times before Christ. You may not know anything about the sport so we will tell you the rules. Horsemen from the whole area gather at one place. They are all excited as they have prepared for the event for the whole year. They are given a kind of a large ball – a skin of a goat filled with something (formerly it was a live goat) – and then the competition begins. The participants should take the goat to a certain place, which is several kilometers away. The one who will be the first to bring the thing to the finish is the winner. The horsemen gallop to the place, trying to wrest the goat from other participants’ grasp. One should be very strong and a very good rider to be able to simultaneously manage his horse and wrestle with his competitors for the goat. Getting off your house is prohibited. The winner is proclaimed the strongest man and the best rider in the area. It is a great honor. National dances, tables full of national dishes, laughter and millions of smiles follow the competition.
Participant 1:. They say is a horse apologizes 100 times, 99 of the times he apologized for his owner. The horse is very loyal and that is where his greatness and nobility lies…

OR

Cockfights

Cockfights is an Uzbek traditional entertainment.
Cockfighting fan: Cockfights last for one, two, three or even five ours sometimes. If cocks start to hurt each other rather seriously we douche them with water to calm them down and then the fight continues. The stronger wins but I should point out the fact that we never let the cocks kill or hurt each other very seriously.
Many people are fans of such entertainment.
Cockfighting fan:I have been a cockfighting fan since I was 12. I’m 52 now and I participate in such events bringing my own whole-bred local fighting cocks. Raising such cocks is very difficult.
Cockfights take place on holidays and Sundays. Winners gain very valuable prizes.
Two cocks fight and each of them has its own group of fans.
Cockfights used to be considered gambling. Now they are considered national games and are developed through breeding cocks. Some cockfighting fans such as Kudrat Karimov even advantage from they hobby financially.

3. Women’s Center

Journalist: Some women in Samarkand no longer want to rely on anyone to solve their problems. They started to solve their problems themselves. Gulsara Khasanova established a Women’s Center in Samarkand. The Center protects women’s rights and interests. The Center’s hot line has helped more than 200 women to find a way out of very hard situations.
Gulsara Khasanova, director of Samarkand Regional Women’s Rights Protection Center: We strongly oppose violence towards women. It’s very good that we at last started to fight for our rights. Many women in our country still do not know their rights and for that reason they become victims of violence.
Journalist: This is one of 16 centers of the kind operating in the region. A year ago they united and made the Regional Union of Women NGOs.
Mariam Shodieva, chairman of the Union: Our aim is to provide moral and legal support to the women in the region. I think it will help them find their place in our society.
Journalist: The Center was established only a year ago but it has already completed several programs. Various seminars and other events of the kind gave good results - many women in Samarkand now know considerably more about their rights. International organizations provide financial support to the Center. But Gulsara Khasanova, the head of the Center, says that due to local mentality, many of women’s problems in the region will not be solved in the near future.
Gulsara Khasanova: It’s our mentality. If a husband beats his wife and she comes home to complain to her parents about her husband, they usually send her back to her husband saying that she should behave better so as not to make her husband angry. They usually say something like “this is how it used to be and this will go on in the future. You should be tolerant and patient.” Violent husbands are rarely punished…

4. Typhoid in Jizzak

Journalist: Eight people from Uyas village in Bakhmal district were brought to the hospital obviously suffering from a severe disease. Initial analysis revealed that the people suffered from typhoid. The staff of the hospital took immediate actions. 68 people in the village, who were in contact with the infected, were also brought to the hospital for medical examination.

5. Is It Easy to Traffic Narcotics

Bekabad is a frontier city and it is used as a terminal in trafficking heroin from Tajikistan. According to the Bekabad City Internal Affairs Department, since the beginning of the year, the City Customs Office has discovered 100 kilograms of drugs. But control on the border is not good enough, so some people do manage to transit drugs through and into the city. This fact is the reason for the higher crime rate among young people in the city. Zukhra Turakulova, age 32 and Nuriddin Almaljonov, age 23 were arrested by the officers of Bekabad City Internal Affairs Department. The two are suspected of trafficking and using drugs.
Utkir Kurbanov, police capitan: We were tipped that this woman in involved in narco-trafficking. During the search at her house we found heroin. Her partner, Nuriddin was also arrested.
Journalist: Zukhra and Nuriddin do not deny being involved in the above-mentioned criminal activities.
Zukhra: I received drugs from one guy from Tajikistan. I paid him only after selling the drugs. We live in poverty.
Journalist: Local police (called “militia”) have recently solved one more narco-trafficking case.
Gulom Sattarov, militia captain and an investigator: Officers of the City Automobile Inspection detained a car (Daewoo Nexia). We searched the car and found 2,3 kilograms of heroin.
