Pressbox (Press Release) -
At approximately 20:47hrs on Saturday 07/04/2001, four appliances from Crawley and Horsham were called to a fire in a flat, persons reported at Lambeth Close, Broadfield, Crawley.
On arrival crews were faced with a severe fire in a ground floor flat, with flames threatening the above property.
Ambulance crews and local residents had already alerted the occupiers of the block of flats to the fire and assisted in a well-organised evacuation.
It was quickly confirmed that the occupants of the flat involved in the fire, one woman and one male child had managed to escape safely, largely due to the heroics of a neighbour, who although unable to gain access due to the flames and heat, was able to smash the ground floor bedroom window and rescue the young child.
The mother, child and neighbour were conveyed to hospital by ambulance, suffering from smoke inhalation.
Firefighters used two jets and eight breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. The flat was severely damaged by fire but due to the quick response of the fire crews, further damage to the block of flats was confined to slight smoke damage.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
