My-Reputation launches famous names package for PR and Marketing Professionals

A new package designed for PR and marketing professionals working with celebrities and famous brands is launched this week by commercial internet watchdog My-Reputation, following the discovery of blatant exploitation of several of their clients on the web.

The Portsmouth based company has traditionally specialised in providing famous brands with information on their internet presence and consultancy tailored to help them create new commercial opportunities on-line, but are increasingly being asked to work on behalf of famous individuals as diverse as Dawn French and Phil Collins.

My-Reputation exposed an explosion in the number of rogue internet entrepreneurs taking advantage of the global public interest in celebrities. Blatant exploitation was found, including being routed to a shopping mall when clicking on celebrity images, hijacking star names for web sites selling bootleg merchandise, and using famous names to entice fans to hard-core porn sites.

“Many celebrities know that shocking abuse of their name is one of the costs of fame in today’s technology-driven society. But they don’t see how they can stop it.” says Mel Croucher, CEO of My-Reputation. “But there is a plus side. The extent of the abuse is directly linked to the level of fame, and it provides valuable insights into the current image and status of a star, as it tells us what information and merchandise is being sought on-line by their fan base. Our Celebrity package works in a similar way to the package we already offer for famous brands, providing knowledge that allows the client to take the initiative and create new revenue streams on-line. It also provides the evidence to take legal action against unauthorised users of their name.”

As with My-Reputation’s Famous Brands package, the Celebrity package comprises a three-stage process. The first is a summary report detailing the extent and nature of the client’s internet presence. The second stage is an extensive report and CD Rom giving recommendations on how the client can create new on-line revenue streams. This report also provides full details of any unauthorised sites that may be exploiting the client’s fame, where the client may wish to take legal action. Following the reports, clients can also choose to have on-going monitoring of their presence on the web.
