I and A Research Announces Breakthrough in Emotion Modeling

New software technique significant development in computer interface design

SAINT-SAUVEUR, QC, CANADA. I and Research Inc. has announced a new development today in the field of artificial intelligence with the advent of EMIR (Emotional Modeling for Intelligent Response) - a new software technique for accurately modelling human emotions in knowledge management, electronic appliances, avionics and computer software.

"This really is a breakthrough," says Charles Guerin, president and CEO of I and A Research. "The ability to make our interaction with electronic products a more human experience offers fantastic new opportunities to software and hardware designers, to create machines that really seem to care."

"Industry research has shown that humans respond to social cues presented by interactive technology in much the same way they respond to other people."

"Our technique takes this concept to a new level," Guerin says. "It allows software to change moods quickly and intuitively based on live data sources in ways that make most people nod and say - 'Yup… Thatıs what Iıd be feeling'."

"We've found a way to add emotion response to just about any software situation. Incorporated into search engines, EMIR has the ability to search for information for the first time, by "feelings". We expect stock media agencies to jump on this as a way to increase revenue."

EMIR reliably derives one of 259 emotion terms from its analysis of any data feed or control system using a proprietary analysis method and series of algorithms.

The techniques were developed by Guerin and Dr. Albert Mehrabian, an expert in psychological measurement, statistical computing and theoretical analysis of complex data and Professor Emeritus of Psychology at UCLA.

Three systems that use EMIR techology are now demonstrable:

1. EMIRWeather uses live Pilot Weather (METAR) data to derive an emotion term that mimics the way a light airplane pilot might feel about weather at an airport in order to support a decision to fly or not to fly.

2. EMIRThermostat simulates a real-time appliance situation where a refrigerator thermostat feels frustrated when the door is left open, happy and in-control when the temperature is in-range, and a full range of emotions on situations in-between.

3. EMIRSearch enhances stock photo and multimedia search engines by allowing photos to be located by emotion with better accuracy than keyword-based systems.

EMIR was recently awarded a Provisional Patent from the U.S. Patent Office.
