eTel Completes Pan-European Scala ERP Installation in Only 9 Weeks
Top 100 telecommunications company installs Scala 5.1 in six countries across Europe, gaining enterprise-wide visibility in an exceptionally short time
2 October 2001: eTel, Central Europe’s leading competitive corporate telecommunications and Internet Service Provider, (ISP), voted Top 100 privately held company by Tornado Insider, has installed the Scala 5.1 back office application. The system standardises reporting procedures at its offices in the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and The Republic of Ireland.
Scala’s technology provides the company with the means to manage the local language, legislation and currency requirements at each of its sites while maintaining control centrally from its head office in Dublin.
“As a fast growing technology company we understand the importance of having the most up-to-date and powerful tools to manage our business. We require a system with sophisticated reporting capabilities and quick-and-easy means of consolidating our business information, from multi-language and multi-currency reports. Scala has provided us with all of this functionality,” says Richard Duggan, CFO at eTel.
According to Duggan, eTel considered various packages in their quest for the right ERP solution. But, the company soon found that no other solution on the market could rival Scala’s understanding of Central European markets and the business functionality to deal with the legislative demands of this region for the budget available for the project. “Scala’s functionality really suits the markets in which we operate. For example, in Slovakia we must be able to handle the many individual processes involved in its highly complex VAT system, regulations and working practices. With its market-specific functionality, Scala ensures that we are able to adhere to all the legal and fiscal requirements of Slovakia and indeed all of the countries in which we operate,” he added.
The Scala team has also worked to integrate with eTel’s customer billing system, with automatic banking facilities set up in the Scala system.
Scala implemented the 6 sites simultaneously after designing a standard template, which included business-specific processes and localisation requirements, for the whole eTel Group.
“We were very impressed with Scala’s implementation team and local consultants who have not only delivered on their promise at all of our sites in a rapid time frame but who have also taken the time to train our staff on all aspects of the system, thereby allowing us to manage the system effectively ourselves,” comments Duggan.
Proof of eTel’s happiness to further extend its relationship with Scala came shortly after the initial installation was completed with eTel choosing to also install Scala at the recently acquired subsidiary in Austria. “We can expand and grow with the knowledge that each new site will be up and running quickly and with the tools to operate on a local level as well as adhering to the companies corporate requirements,” concludes Duggan.
eTel uses a centralised Scala solution, running the main server with the complete database from Prague. This gives them several competitive advantages such as simpler data maintenance, easier report generation and financial consolidation as well as a more straightforward process when adding new companies when expanding the business globally. Any of the companies can be easily accessed without the need for physical travel, which together with the internal benefits contributes to reducing the total cost of ownership.
“Not only do companies operating in the European market need systems to effectively manage and standardise business processes across the enterprise, they also need to operate and report according to many different languages, legislations and standards. This is where Scala stands out from other ERP vendors – our software is translated into over 30 languages and designed to meet the various legal requirements of companies who do business in different local markets, and endorsements from Europe’s leading companies such as eTel confirm this,” says Martina Maresova Managing Director of Scala Business Solutions in the Czech Republic.
