RAPIST FIGHTS FOR FREEDOM

Added: (Sat Feb 17 2001)

Pressbox (Press Release) - John Lee Simpson goes to the Appeal Court in London on Monday to secure his freedom following a conviction last May for rape.

Simpson, of previous good character, has been in custody following conviction at Manchester Crown Court.

The appellant, who has always protested his innocence, has considerable support from a most unusual quarter. Those who prosecuted him at the hearing have indicated that they themselves have some grave doubts as to the reliability of the conviction.

His solicitor, Milton Firman, said today:

" This is, I believe, another painful miscarriage of justice where an innocent man has been convicted on the basis of unreliable evidence."

Simpson, father of two, hopes to be freed from custody at Monday's appeal hearing.
