Pressbox (Press Release) - Legal specialist Wacks Caller adopts a proactive approach to HR to fuel planned expansion

* Rapidly growing Manchester-based solicitors signs with Qikker Solutions to implement an innovative new recruitment approach to develop a ‘talent pool’ in support of its planned ongoing expansion *

8th February 2002 -- One of the leading legal specialists in corporate and commercial legal work in the North West, Manchester-based Wacks Caller has chosen Qikker Solutions’ web-native ‘Talent Pool Building’ service to support its development plans. Founded in 1986, the last two years have been particularly successful for Wacks Caller and have resulted in a an increased head count of over 30%.

“We are delighted with the quality of the new people hired and their contribution to the business,” commented Martin Caller, senior partner at Wacks Caller. “However, as we have grown our annual recruitment costs have become substantial, in excess of 100K in 2001 alone, and have caused us to examine if there are not more efficient and cost effective ways of managing our planned ongoing recruitment.”

In 2001 the legal firm reviewed its then recruitment processes to gain a better understanding of the true costs and resource requirements in order to establish a ‘base-line’ against which it could compare alternative approaches. The key achievements required from any new approach were identified as:
1. A significant reduction in overall costs
2. A reduction in administrative overhead
3. No additional impact on internal systems support requirement
4. Implementation of a continuous process that supports a drive to hire the right people as they become available.

The company evaluated at a number of options over a three-month period, paying particular attention to Internet-based services. This resulted in the selection of a new web-native ‘Talent Pool Building’ service from Qikker Solutions. Appropriate potential applicants are encouraged to register their interest ‘on-line’ via a new careers section on the Wacks Caller website (more about this?) which replaced the old passive careers section typical of most current websites.

“We chose Qikk Prospector as it met all our selection criteria for a new approach,” said Simon Wallwork, Wacks Caller’s partner in charge of the project. “Our HR staff and line managers are able to use the back-end application to manage the recruitment process from creation and posting vacancies, through to the selection and appointment of a candidate. We also particularly like the fact that appropriate candidates register their interest directly into our database, removing a significant administrative overhead, and enable us to build our own ‘talent pool’ of candidates for current and future vacancies,” he continued.

Qikk Prospector is delivered using a hosted application service provider (ASP) approach that results in a simple monthly rental charge for the use of the service. This results in no capital outlay requirement and no IT systems overhead as the service is accessed via a simple web browser on the user’s desktop. The application is brand-enabled so that it automatically assumes the current look and feel of a client’s website, and is simply configured by clients to reflect the roles, skills and competencies required by their business.

“Our expectation is that we will be able to dramatically reduce our recruitment cost and administrative overhead very quickly and, given the nature of the ASP model, achieve this without any capital outlay or IT overhead,” said Wallwork. “By ensuring that we continuously position Wacks Caller as an exciting and progressive firm to work for through all our communications, we expect to rapidly develop our ‘talent pool’ to achieve our final goal of a proactive and continuous recruitment process,” he concluded.

Mark Barlow, managing director of Qikker Solutions adds, “Wacks Caller’s example is typical of the changing attitude to recruitment. The cost continues to rise year on year but people are asking ‘exactly what do you get for your money?’ Where is your equity?” . “Building an easily accessible talent pool of external and internal resources delivers equity to an organisation by providing a business asset, a database of prospective and current staff to reduce external dependence. Qikk Prospector is a third generation web-native application that bolts straight into an existing website enabling our clients to begin the process of developing their own ‘talent pools’ in a very efficient and proactive way. We believe this approach represents the future of cost effective recruitment and resource management and will be of interest to others in the legal profession.”
