Esoteric Solutions are one of the first companies to take advantage or Microsoft’s new Terminal Services Advanced Client (TSAC) that was released in late June this year.
The TSAC, developed for Windows 2000, is a 32-bit Windows-based ActiveX control that lets users run Terminal Services sessions from within Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 and above. The new ActiveX control provides almost the same functionality as the full Terminal Services Client, but is designed to deliver this functionality over the Internet.
Esoteric Solutions have taken Windows 2000 Terminal Server along with the new TSAC and produced a site called TryLive (http://www.trylive.co.uk ).
Visitors of the site can try out many different applications live in their web browser, from big commercial software to small homegrown shareware without having to download any of the applications to their local machine.
The main advantages to the visitors of TryLive is that they no longer have to endure lengthy downloads, risk of potential viruses, complicated install routines, machine reboots or time lapse nag screens. They just simply click their mouse button onto a launch icon and remote control the application that has been installed on TryLive’s application servers.
The most obvious advantage to software developers is that no software actually leaves the servers and hence there is no threat of piracy, cracks or hacks that takes place on a huge scale via the internet. Another big advantage is the reduced cost in producing demonstration cd’s, packaging and postage. They can now simply guide people towards a web link to try out a full version of their application.
Before the new TSAC came along the only way of running applications live in your web browser was to install third party software such as Citrix Metaframe.
The downside of this was the cost of licenses which are on a per seat connection basis, compared with now only having one connection license which will support up to 200 connections per server, this is known as Microsoft’s Internet connector license.
After one week of going live we have been very pleased with the response and feedback received, with over 25 companies already using our free service.
