London. February 21 2001.

Geoffrey Paul, the former editor of the Jewish Chronicle, has been appointed Director of the Anglo-Israel Association, the premier body devoted to the promotion of good relations between the United Kingdom and Israel.

He will succeed David Sumberg, the director of the AIA since 1997 and former Conservative MP for Bury South, who has asked to be released from his responsibilities with the AIA in order to concentrate on his duties as a Member of the European Parliament.

Announcing the new appointment this week, Lady Sainsbury, the Acting Chairman of the AIA, paid warm tribute to Mr Sumberg’s informed and highly skilled contribution to the advancement of the AIA’s purposes.

She welcomed Mr Paul’s inclusion in the ranks of those actively working for the further strengthening of ties between Britain and Israel and expressed her confidence that relations between the two countries would be even further enhanced in the years ahead.
