Australia immigration experts look to Canada for inspiration

Australia immigration is the subject of much debate, both within the country and outside, as the country struggles with placing many of its thousands of immigrants in the country and providing them with the resources they need. The Prime Minister of Australia Mr. Scott Morrison has pledged to bring down the cap on annual permanent resident visas even further from the current levels, which are the lowest in the decade.
The Prime Minister has also stressed on the need for a different approach to Australia immigration which is currently placing a lot of stress on the infrastructure of big cities. He recommended a model where states and territories could put in a request for the exact number of skilled immigrants that they would like to receive into their respective states.
One immigration model that Australia would be looking to emulate, would be the Canadian one. Canada’s immigration system gives provinces a greater say and autonomy in setting targets for immigration, which helps to channel migrants into the rural areas and ease the pressure off major metropolitan areas. The need for immigration reform becomes more imminent as more than 20 percent of the current Australian population is comprised of immigrants. This is creating a crisis for Australian cities as more than 80 percent of the immigrants are currently opting to live in the cities. In the current Australia immigration system, the states a have a limited role to play in nominating skilled visa applicants. Prime Minister Morrison is asking for a bigger role to be played by the territories. Citing the example of the Canadian government which gives its provinces a greater autonomy for setting immigration targets as well as deciding on eligibility criteria for nomination. This step has helped to reduce the stress of immigration on cities by shifting the bulk of immigrants towards the rural areas. Modelling itself on the Canadian policy, the Australia immigration system can also find the perfect solution for its immigration problems
