RING OF SUCCESS FOR LOCAL CHARITY

Ross-Shire based charity, Rape and Abuse Line (RAL) has won an award of 1,000 from GlaxoSmithKline as part of their IMPACT Awards Scheme for 2001.

The charity aims to relieve the emotional distress of survivors of rape and abuse. Its confidential Helpline is available every night of the year, there is face-to-face support, and, for the first time, a male Helpline.

RAL’s Administrator, Joan Bell said: "We’re delighted to have won this prestigious award. The recognition is a real boost to all our staff. Each year the number of calls that we receive substantially grows. There is a dire need for our service and the award will help us meet that need."

Margaret Bailey, Manager of GlaxoSmithKline European Community Partnership Programme said: "We were very impressed with RAL. It has a strong volunteer base and offers excellent training. The strong commitment from the staff has shown that the organisation has developed significantly since its inception in 1990."

Working in partnership with the King’s Fund, a leading independent health charity, the GlaxoSmithKline Impact Awards are designed to recognise and promote the work of voluntary organisations in the demanding area of community healthcare. In this, the fourth year of the programme, ten awards of 25,000 and ten awards of 1000 have been made to small and medium sized registered charities in the UK.

GlaxoSmithKline - one of the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies - is committed to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.
