My marriage is over
If you come to realise your relationship is over, this is extremely difficult for several people and for several reasons.
You most likely didn’t get married for it to end up in divorce: had hopes, dreams a vision of your future together and it’s all shattered. You could be left with conflicting feelings, usually swaying from wanting to make the marriage work to anger at it ending and sometimes it can even be anger towards the other person for the breakdown of the marriage.
Anger
It is a common feeling which occurs when a marriage ends for various reasons, usually this feeling tends to be more dominant over other feelings because of how intense it is. You could be feeling betrayed by your ex-partner for destroying your hopes and dreams, this is quite common and expected. Working through the anger is key for you to be able to move on and not suffer in the future whether you’re in a relationship or not.
Hurt
Yes, this is extremely normal just like the other feelings. Whether the reason your marriage ended was mutual or not. You have a right to feel the way you do, it is common to feel hurt and be in pain when an emotional connection ends, even if you know it’s for the best. It stills hurts. A relationship is a relationship, and you are emotionally connected to the other person regardless of whether it as healthy or not. Give yourself permission to feel hurt, it will pass.
Relief
For some individuals they may feel a sense of relief when a marriage ends, it’s not that uncommon. You may have prepared emotionally and mentally for the relationship to end before it actually did, which results in you feeling a sense of relief and less pressure about being in the relationship. You may find that you don’t feel intense emotions at the marriage ending which would be expected if you had already checked out!
Hope
If you didn’t want your marriage to end, you will be holding onto hope that it may work out or you could find a way to make things work. You’re not ready to let go and it can be extremely painful to be faced with the reality that it is. You could be left making effort and trying in the hopes that it will work. The feelings are and will be very intense, you’ll struggle with the marriage ending. At some point in your own time, you may come to terms with what’s happened, when you do, you may find you’re going to be grieving for the end of the relationship – a normal response to the situation at hand.
A chance
If you both come to realise you do want to make your marriage work and don’t want to go through a divorce – this is great news! You both could attend marriage counselling to be met with an objective, independent person who may help you both address the issues in your relationship to give your relationship a fighting chance.
As the saying goes ‘insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result’.
