HipSavers Proven to Prevent Hip Fractures in Boston Seniors

Added: (Sun Oct 29 2000)

Pressbox (Press Release) - East Boston, MA, October 30, 2000-
A two-year independent study of frail seniors at risk of a hip fracture shows that HipSaver hip protector underwear
prevents the hip fractures that often dictate expensive, debilitating, and dreaded nursing home stays for elders.
HipSavers are underwear incorporating a soft, thin pad over each hip bone to absorb and dissipate the impact of a fall.
As reported in the current issue of "Advance for Physical Therapists",
a high-risk group from the Elder Service Plan of East Boston Neighborhood Health Center that wore HipSavers experienced no hip fractures at all compared to a 4.3% fracture rate in a less at-risk group not wearing HipSavers. Without HipSavers, at this 4.3% rate, the intervention group would have been expected to have at least 9 hip fractures.
