British Dental Health Foundation Backs No Smoking Day 2001
The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) is supporting national No Smoking Day on 14 March to help reduce unnecessary misery from oral diseases and death from cancer.
The BDHF is launching a promotional drive to raise awareness of its free consumer advice service, Word of Mouth and to provide public access to advice and information about important oral health issues such as smoking and oral cancer.
Hundreds of thousands of posters and pocket - size information cards will be distributed to GP surgeries, libraries, Citizen Advice Bureaus, schools and colleges from 12 March 2001.
Word of Mouth is staffed by qualified dental nurses. They respond personally to approximately 2000 telephone and email enquiries every month, providing impartial and independent advice on all aspects of oral health.
The public can contact Word of Mouth on 0870 333 1188 from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm or online at www.wordofmouth.org.uk
The BDHF produces a range of supporting patient literature that is written in a non - technical style and has been approved by the Word Centre to ensure clarity.
Free leaflets and brochures are available from Word of Mouth on 34 topics and this includes; mouth cancer, gum disease and bad breath.
A Word of Mouth spokesperson said, “Smoking is one of the major causes of oral cancer and kills nearly 2000 people every year. It has also been proven that smoking can cause bad breath, increased tooth loss and gum disease, which in turn can lead to heart disease.
“Oral cancer is currently the cause of more deaths in the UK than cervical cancer and the most common form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma.
“Oral cancer is detectable through regular check ups and screening and can be easily treated if it is caught early enough.”
A copy of these leaflets can be obtained by sending a SAE to BDHF, Eastlands Court, St Peters Road, Rugby, Warwickshire, CV21 3QP.
