PLAID CYMRU LEADER SLAMMED FOR “BREATHTAKING HYPOCRISY” ON ELECTION CLAIMS
Clwyd South MP, MARTYN JONES today slammed the leader of the Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru, for “breathtaking hypocrisy” for conducting a ‘whistlestop’ electioneering tour of North East Wales at the height of the foot and mouth outbreak - while simultaneously calling on the Prime Minister not to call a General Election in May.
Commenting on the revelation, Martyn Jones said:
“At the same time as he was dishing out so-called ‘advice’ to the Prime Minister on why the General Election should not go ahead, Ieuan Wyn Jones was scurrying around my constituency (Clwyd South) with his party’s prospective parliamentary candidate in tow actually campaigning for that election. The hypocrisy is breath-taking.”
“Given the fact that Ieuan Wyn Jones comes from Anglesey (Ynys Mon), and his candidate comes from Caernarfon - I think it was grossly irresponsible of Plaid Cymru to begin electioneering in my constituency during the current outbreak.”
Local press reports (in the Wrexham Evening Leader) described the Plaid Cymru leader as conducting a “whistlestop” tour of the North East Wales during a single day (including Corwen, Llangollen and Wrexham) two weeks ago - the same time as he wrote to Tony Blair asking him not to call a General Election in May.
“I think Ieuan Wyn Jones owes my constituents and the Prime Minister an apology for his tour of Clwyd South. He called on the Prime Minister not to put party interests before rural communities during the foot and mouth outbreak - at the same as he was doing precisely the opposite. Ieuan Wyn Jones should practice what he preaches.”
