Pressbox (Press Release) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
(January 30, 2001 – Los Angeles, CA) Friends of Hustler Publisher Larry Flynt are nominating him for the “Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award” to call attention to Mr. Flynt’s long history of fighting for free speech. Starting Tuesday, January 30th, Mr. Flynt’s friends—calling themselves “People With B.A.L.L.S.” (Bold Attitudes Like Larry’S)-- have ads coming out in Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Village Voice and LA Weekly, to put on record that they are nominating Mr. Flynt for the Playboy award.

“Regardless of how you feel about Larry Flynt, he is one of the most famous and ardent defenders of free speech in our country. In college Constitutional law courses, it’s no accident one of the cases you study is Flynt vs. Jerry Falwell,” says Peter Eliasberg, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union.

According to a Playboy press release, anyone can be nominated for the awards program, in its 21st year, which “honors individuals who have made significant contributions to protect and enhance First Amendment rights of Americans.” People with B.A.L.L.S. have collected more than 50 petitions in favor of Larry Flynt. The group hopes by publicly calling attention to Larry’s nomination, Playboy will give him proper consideration—even though he is Playboy’s very successful competitor.

“If Playboy is serious about honoring people in our country who have fought for the First Amendment, then many would ask who better deserves this award from Playboy than Hustler Publisher Larry Flynt?” says attorney Kenny Kahn, who represented Mr. Flynt in one of his hard-won court battles.

Mr. Flynt has been involved in more than 14 cases involving the First Amendment over the last thirty years, and in a majority of those cases he won. Larry Flynt’s passion for fighting for free speech was portrayed in the movie “The People vs. Larry Flynt” starring Woody Harrelson and Courtney Love.

People with B.A.L.L.S. hopes Hugh Hefner and Playboy have “B.A.L.L.S.” when it comes to giving out the First Amendment Awards.
