What Career Avenues are available for an Industrial Designer?

Pressbox (Press Release) - Industrial design is the discipline of creating and optimizing products and systems in function and value as well as aesthetics, combining elements of art and engineering. The importance of industrial design has risen in the recent past, as its value is increasingly being recognized in collaborations across various disciplines as well as its contribution to innovation. With the rise in demand for this field, the number of industrial design colleges in India has also increased.

A student of industrial design will learn the skill of developing solutions that are marketable design concepts while taking into account social, economical, environmental, functional and ergonomic factors.

Skills acquired from studying industrial design can be used in fields of information technology, graphic modeling and multimedia. Following is a list of career options that one can choose from the above fields on having completed a course in industrial design:
1) Product Designer

An industrial designer can work with companies that deal with design, manufacturing, engineering or architectural services.
The job profile of a product designer includes creation of new products or improving existing products. Products that an industrial designer would be responsible for designing include mobile phones, household electronic appliances and even complex machinery like cars.

2) Industrial Design Researcher

As an industrial design researcher you could work with firms that are research institutes, IT companies and manufacturing companies.
In this role, the most essential learning would be to understand the needs of consumers and then being able to provide solutions that focus on improving the design elements, as well as the utility of the product for the user. Some examples of such products are applications, electronic gadgets or even items of clothing.

3) Art Director

As an art director you could work for books, magazines, advertising agencies or even public relations firms.
An art director takes charge of all visual elements like images etc. in magazines, newspapers, books and movie productions. The overall vision and the message a project will give is decided by an art director. In this role you would be required to manage teams of artists and designers that will create the layouts for a project.
