Wandsworth Council & GumFighters run high profile awareness
campaign to create Gum free streets.

The sticky problem of unsightly black and white blobs of thoughtlessly discarded chewing gum are unfortunately all too common a sight nowadays. However not for much longer!

Wandsworth Council are spending 84,000, which is the largest amount that has been allocated in the country solely for the removal of chewing gum. To do this they have called in the Chewing gum removal specialists GumFighters UK to carry out an 11-week clean-up blitz.

Alongside the clean up GumFighters will be running a high-profile educational and public awareness campaign. With an estimated 150 million being spent every year nationally to clear up discarded gum GumFighters consider this program to be vital.

The awareness program kicks of on Tuesday 30th October with an assembly at John Burns School, which will then be followed by an exercise with a class in Clapham Junction to highlight the damage caused by discarded gum. After the exercise school children will be handing out information leaflets to passers-by, encouraging the responsible disposal of chewing gum.

The unique GumFighters equipment uses high temperature low-pressure steam combined with an environmentally friendly cleaning agent to dissolve blobs of gum in just four seconds. The system also uses a maximum of 25 litres of water a day and because of this can be used during the day causing no disruption to pedestrians.

To mark the start of the program to the public there will be photo call at 11 am on Tuesday 30th October, outside Arding & Hobbs, St Johns Rd, Clapham Junction. At the same time children from John Burns School will be drawing chalk circles around discarded gum on the streets whilst council members will be putting the gum removal equipment through its paces.

Cllr Guy Senior, cabinet member for environment and public services says,’ Getting rid of the gum on our streets is a massive job. That's why we've gone to the experts at GumFighters.’

"Between now and Christmas the GumFighters equipment will be a familiar sight in all the borough's town centres at Clapham Junction, Balsam, Tooting, Putney and Wands worth. The cost of 'unsticking' pavements around the country must run into millions. That's why it is so important we get our message across that carelessly discarding your old gum is an anti social habit we could all do without."

Mark Williams-Thomas, GumFighters Marketing Director says, “We are pleased to be working to create a cleaner and healthier environment for those visiting or living in the borough of Wandsworth. However it is very important that people realise the damage caused by discarded gum and dispose of it correctly.”
You are invited to send a photographer/reporter to a photo call on Tuesday 30th October, at 11am, outside Arding & Hobbs, St Johns Rd, Clapham Junction.
