--MTN South Africa Selects Logica to Increase Revenues and Further Expand Customer Base--
Logica today announced the deployment of revolutionary technology that allows South African operator MTN to offer "cross network" applications, which can be accessed using one number by mobile subscribers regardless of their chosen network. The implementation enables MTN to dramatically increase its customer base and revenue potential for interactive SMS services, such as Wireless Instant Messaging (WIM).
To meet MTN’s needs, Logica has delivered its new product, the Foreign Subscriber Gateway, plus an additional two high performance Short Message Centers and a Message Application Router in its network. Prior to the deployment of Logica's Foreign Subscriber Gateway, MTN was unable to generate revenues from WIM subscribers if they were not connected to the MTN network, because of the way messages were routed from these subscribers back to the application. By solving this routing problem, Logica's Foreign Subscriber Gateway has opened up a new revenue stream for MTN and will fuel the market for new cross-network SMS services such as TV voting and Wireless Marketing.
Sidney Arnold General Manager of MTN commented, "We see a huge demand for
interactive SMS, such as instant messaging, so it is critical that we have a way of ensuring we can maximise revenues from these services. We selected Logica's Foreign Subscriber Gateway as it offers the functionality we require, and is designed to control and manage the huge traffic peaks associated with these services. Logica's ability to deliver a mission-critical solution in the shortest possible timeframe was also a key factor in our decision."
Gerry McKenna CEO of Logica Mobile Networks said, "We are delighted to strengthen our relationship with MTN through the deployment of our Foreign Subscriber Gateway and the additional Short Message Centres. Logica's solution will enable MTN to grow its messaging traffic, build relationships with subscribers from other networks and provide an extremely rapid and effective way to deploy rapidly mass-market SMS applications.”
MTN currently offers WIM, through its portal site www.mtnsms.com and www.icq.com. The service allows mobile users to exchange messages in real time with on-line friends anywhere in the world.
