NEW SURVEY INTO HOPES AND FEARS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL CHILDREN
Making new friends, the risk of bullying and breaking relationships with school staff are the most pressing issues that concern children moving from primary to secondary education.
These are some of the findings of a Scripture Union survey as part of a major new project, Itís Your Move.
Following hard on the heels of Stories for the Millennium and Stories for 2000, which topped sales of 350,000, Scripture Union is bringing out another valuable resource to help bridge the gap between local churches and schools. It's Your Move! tackles issues thrown up by a survey conducted by SU this summer amongst 781 schoolchildren, from across the British Isles, who were about to move on up to secondary school. They were asked three questions:
*What will be the best thing about your new school?
*What will you most miss from your old school?
*What is the most scary thing about going to your new school?
What is the most scary thing about going to your new school?
Older children/being bullied 29%
Getting lost 19%
Fear of not making friends/not knowing anyone 11%
Amount of work and homework 10%
The bigness of the school 10%
Being the youngest/smallest in the school 5%
Getting told off/detention 4%
Being left out 2%
The journey to school 1%
In contrast, the things they most looked forward to were making new friends (43%), learning new subjects with different teachers and the sports activities.
Over 80% would most miss relationships with friends, teachers or dinner ladies.
It's Your Move! addresses some of these issues and prepares children for moving schools, through a magazine format of stories, poems, information, advice and personal experience. It is designed for all young people whether from a church background or with little or no previous church contact. It gently challenges readers to think about how a relationship with God might positively help in making such a big change.
Contributors include Nick Harding, Education and Training Officer for Southwell Diocese, Nick Jeffrey who works with Year 7 pupils in Bristol and, of course, young people themselves!
Children from years 6 and 7 share their anticipation about changing schools and those from Years 7 and 8 reflect on the transition. You'll just have to read the book to see what Simon Thomas, presenter of Blue Peter, remembers about his first day at secondary school!
Ro Willoughby, editor of It's Your Move! says, "We are confident this unique gift book will be widely used in schools and will be another tool for churches to use as they build stronger relationships within their community."
It's Your Move! available in January 2001 costs £2.99 per single copy or just £1 per copy if bought in packs of ten! .
Note: Scripture Union is one of the UK's premier Christian charitites, communicating the Chistian faith through schools work, church based evangeklism and publishing.
