Children to Educate UN and to Try to Save a School

Two children will be travelling to the UN
International Conference on Education at Geneva next
week (5th-8th September). The children are from an
elected committee representing the oldest school in
the world based on children's rights, Summerhill
School, Leiston, Suffolk.

They are going to set-up an exhibition celebrating
their school and inviting UN delegates to learn from
this successful model, showing how democracy and
community living can be learnt and achieved. They will
also be inviting the ministers of education from
around the world to join in the celebrations of
Summerhill's 80th birthday. The theme of the UN
conference is 'Learning to live in communities'.

James Friss-Lawrence (16) and Natasha Manning-Warder
(15) will be asking UN delegates to support the
survival of a similar 'democratic school' in Taiwan.
The Pei Cheng Autonomous School, is being threatened
with closure by the new mayor of Taipai, Ma Yin Chiu,
despite the enthusiastic support by the previous
mayor. Both Natasha and James were part of
Summerhill's campaign committee that helped their
school in its successful fight against the British
government's attempts to close it. They hope to use
their skills and experiences to help save the
Taiwanese school.

They will be accompanied to the UN Conference by two
Summerhill teachers, Lenka Manning-Warder (art
teacher) and Michael Newman (Curriculum Adviser).

Further information:

The group will be leaving from Heathrow at 8am Tuesday
4th September. Lenka Manning-Warder will be making a
video diary of the trip with a digital camera and
James will be writing a diary for the net.
