All You Need to Know About Six Sigma Methodologies

Added: (Mon Dec 24 2018)

Pressbox (Press Release) - Six Sigma is a set of techniques and tools that improve the quality of output of a process by eliminating identified defects. With Six Sigma, process and quality management can be improved contributing to a higher success rate of project completion as well as minimizing the costs of a business.
To date, Six Sigma professionals typically save at least $200k on a project and are capable of carrying out 3-4 projects in a financial year. Become a professional with Six Sigma Green Belt training and bring the change!
Six Sigma Methodologies:

Even though six sigma consists of a set of tools and techniques, it employs two methodologies which contribute to minimizing risks associated. To begin with, Six Sigma methods follow a set of sequence steps with specific value targets that have to be attained. These value targets vary from project to project and always concentrate on a unified goal rather than multiple goals.

The methodologies of six sigma are namely: DMAIC, DFSS (DMADV).

DMAIC Methodology

DMAIC, an acronym for Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control; is the most used methodology by Six Sigma professionals. Breaking down;

Define – By using a project charter document, write down what is currently known to articulate business problems, goals, potential resources, project scope and set objectives by seeking facts. A clear definition of the requirement is ‘what must be achieved and how it can be achieved fall under the Define Phase.’

Measure – Collect data that can establish a process to calculate performance and determine improvements. Having set a standard metric to look back at, one can always measure progress, assess sustainability and have a track of the project.

Analyse – Purpose of this phase is to assess factors and underlying risks to eliminate them when identified. Through proper analysis of a particular problem, risks can be identified; which are to be validated before performing a specific action. With this phase, six sigma methods can be applied as one can list and prioritize root causes of the problem, identify and eliminate key factors that contribute to the problem

Improve – Through proper definition, measurement and analysis, risks are identified. The processes have to be improved by identifying, testing and implementing a solution to the problem entirely or at least partially for the time being. General Improvisation process includes creating a solution that focuses on being simple and easy to implement; followed by the PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act) for improvement deployments.

Control – Purpose of this phase is to ensure that all steps taken to reduce risk are in action. It is done to regulate standards of the project throughout the timeline and sustain gains. By monitoring the improvements and having them controlled, one can eliminate risk, which returns the objective of Six Sigma

DFSS Methodology

DFSS, an acronym for Design for Six Sigma, utilizes DMADV Methodology. Breaking down;

Define – Focuses on defining project goals rather than addressing problems straight away unlike DMAIC methodology

Measure – Measures critical components rather than detailing of various aspects of the current process and estimating product capabilities

Analyse – Gather data to be analysed, develop iterative designs for the best model rather than identifying all root defects at once and fixing them

Design – Test details of the process which are designed to identify any issues and check feasibility

Verify – Before handing over the process to the client, verify the functionalities and design by running simulations forehand to eliminate errors, if any.

Both methods, having their advantages and disadvantages, the objective of employing six sigma is to ensure that no more than 3.4 defects arise per million opportunities. Hence, robust ways of applying these methods along with practices are used, generally by a Green Belt Professional guided by a Black Belt.
