Barnes & Nobel, the largest book retailer on the Internet, reports that customers purchasing bestsellers "Angels & Demons," "Life of Pi," and "Secret Life of Bees" are embracing the fast-rising novel "My Fractured Life" by Rikki Lee Travolta.
"The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd is currently ranked as one of Barnes & Nobel's top 13 sellers.
The swelling sales popularity among the same audience of purchasers for Kidd and Travolta was first reported in the week of September 24 by Amazon.com. The global leader in e-commerce has sales of over 30 million customers worldwide.
Set in the year of the Civil Rights Act, "The Secret Life of Bees" is the story of a fourteen-year-old on the lam with her motherly African-American servant Rosaleen, fleeing both the girl's abusive father and the police who battered Rosaleen for defending her new right to vote. The teen is also fleeing memories of how she accidentally shot and killed her mother.
Taking place in the wake of the suicide of his best friend, "My Fractured Life" tells the story of a fallen actor whose looks outshine his talents, but cannot conceal a soul damaged by a childhood of abuse. Substance abuse becomes more than an emotional crutch, it becomes a way of life.
Kidd is the author of two widely acclaimed nonfiction books. Travolta's nonfiction work has been published internationally by journalism media giants CMP Media, Miller Freeman, BNP, and Cahners Publishing - which publishes the leading entertainment industry "Variety."
"Angels & Demons" by New York Times bestselling author Dan Brown is currently ranked 25 in sales reports from Barnes & Nobel. Brown is the author of numerous bestselling novels, including the #1 New York Times bestseller, "The Da Vinci Code."
Brown is a graduate of Amherst College and Phillips Exeter Academy, where he spent time as an English teacher before turning his efforts fully to writing. Dedicated to education and literacy, Travolta took a break from his writing and entertainment careers to serve as a guest English teacher at Horlick High School in Racine, Wisconsin during the summer of 2003. He has lectured at numerous colleges in the fine arts.
"Life of Pi" is about a boy on the cusp of adulthood who survives a transatlantic boat sinking only to find himself in a lifeboat with his zookeeper father's most dangerous animals. Author Yann Martel was born in Spain and grew up in multiple countries through Europe and North America. Travolta is of Italian and Nez Perce (American Indian) descent, although his father was born in Australia.
Barnes & Nobel also reports a popularity of Travolta's "My Fractured Life" among those purchasing the import "Baise-MOI" by Virginie Despentes (English translation by Bruce Benderson) and "The King of Torts" by John Grisham.
"Baise-MOI" draws on the spiky cadences of England's punk pioneers the Sex Pistols, and the murderous eroticism of Georges Bataille and Dennis Cooper. Grisham is the author of such bestsellers as "The Firm," "Bleachers," and "The Client." In 1983, he was elected to the state House of Representatives and served until 1990.
Amazon.com offers Travolta's "My Fractured Life" to international audiences through www.Amazon.com (U.S.A), www.Amazon.co.uk (United Kingdom), www.Amazom.de (Germany), www.Amazon.fr (France), www.Amazon.co.jp (Japan), and www.Amazon.ca (Canada).
In addition to its retail outlets around the U.S., Barnes & Nobel sells on-line through two Internet portals: www.bn.com and www.barnesandnobel.com. Since opening its online store in March 1997, Barnes & Noble.com has attracted more than 14.4 million customers in 230 countries.
Barnes & Noble.com's bookstore includes the largest in-stock selection of in-print book titles with access to approximately one million titles for immediate delivery, supplemented by more than 30 million listings from its nationwide network of out-of-print, rare and used book dealers.
