CASH FOR NIGHTSAFE
A Blackburn charity set up to help the homeless, Nightsafe, has won a £1,000 award as part of GlaxoSmithKline’s IMPACT Awards Scheme for 2001.
Nightsafe aims to help young homeless people aged 16–24 years old. Its day centre, Fusebox, provides a base for the increasing number of homeless and offers daily educational activities on all life-skills and health issues.
Nightsafe also offers a crisis night shelter, longer-term support and one bedroom flats. Training is given to help people make the transition from dependence to independent living.
Says Paula Kaniuk, Nightsafe Manager: "We’re delighted to have won this prestigious award, not only does it give us a cash boost but reinforces us as being one of the leading local homeless charities."
Margaret Bailey, Manager of GlaxoSmithKline’s European Community Partnership Programme said: "We were impressed by Nightsafe’s supportive and encouraging role toward young people and their situations.
Their work is innovative, fun and last year helped over 400 young people."
Working in partnership with the King’s Fund, a leading independent health charity, the GlaxoSmithKline Impact Awards are designed to recognise and promote the work of voluntary organisations in the demanding area of community healthcare. In this, the fourth year of the programme, ten awards of £25,000 and ten awards of £1,000 have been made to small and medium sized registered charities in the UK.
