Pirelli reaches the 50,000km mark for OPGW installations

Added : ( Mon Jul 29 2002 )

Pirelli, The Architects of Light, have set another milestone in their history of optical technology.

Milan, 29th July 2002 - Pirelli Telecom Cables and Systems has recently completed delivery of an Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) system which takes its total installed cable volume past the 50,000 km mark.

OPGW cable forms an integral part of an overhead electricity transmission network and performs both the primary function of a conventional earth conductor together with the provision of a state-of-the-art telecommunications link thanks to the optical fibres contained within. Long distance communications networks can be quickly and efficiently established without the need for slow and costly underground installation of cables.

Pirelli started production of OPGW in 1983 and has since supplied the cable to 42 countries in five continents. The cable is produced at Pirelli's Design and Manufacturing Centre of Excellence in Vilanova i la Geltru in Spain and also at the Soracaba facility in Brazil.

The customer for this milestone project was Red Electrica de Espana (REE) and the occasion was marked at a special ceremony in Madrid involving the President of REE, Mr Pedro Mielgo and the CEO of Pirelli Telecom Cables & Systems, Mr Kevin Riddett.

"OPGW is a key part of the global Pirelli product portfolio," said Mr Riddett. "We have almost 20 years experience in its production and ongoing development and in fact have been supplying to REE for the last 15 years. We are delighted to have reached this important point in the product's evolution and are confident that the next 50,000 km will soon be installed within power utilities worldwide".

Red Electrica, since its creation in 1985 has been in charge of the Spanish transmission grid and the operation of the electricity system. Red Electrica provides traders in the power market with a reliable transmission network and guarantees access to this network without discrimination".

Pirelli Telecom Cables and Systems is one of the world's foremost suppliers of telecommunications cable systems and is part of the Pirelli SpA Group which employs more than 39,000 people in 84 plants across the globe. In 2001 it achieved a turnover of more than Euro 7,500 billion, continuing to maintain a strong emphasis on innovative research
